Israel election: Prime Minister Netanyahu

Recommended Posts

Israel's prime minister has called an early general election, which could come as soon as January, nine months ahead of schedule.

Benjamin Netanyahu said the new elections for the 120-member Knesset - the Israeli parliament - would take place "as soon as possible."

His right-wing coalition government has been in power since 2009.

Although he remains a popular leader he has been unable to agree the annual budget with his coalition partners.

The next election had originally been scheduled to take place in October next year.

Good, lets hope he gets kicked out and is substituted by somebody with a brain. A comeback of Olmert would not be bad.

It sounds like he isn't worried at all that he might lose. He is trying to consolidate power. I wish him the best.

Under pressure?

Doubt it, he is fighting for his political survival. He staked too much on the Iran attack that will not happen.

Most of the Israeli press seems to think he's made the right choice. He's quite popular just now. Just because most Israelis are hesitant to go to war does not mean they don't want a leader with the cajones to do what has to be done.

Gwd.. had to look up what cajones meant.. never heard em called that before...

Anway, I for one hope he' gets ousted.. It sounds like the people of israel are sick of war so they need a leader with the cajones to give them a future without war.. Not one who seems hell bent on promoting one and starting one..

If he called for early elections it wouldn't be because he expects to lose. The situation there isn't a internet debate. They are thinking of survival.

I have no doupt that he is thinking of his own survival because of the budget impass, and wants to use that as an internal political platform to stand on.

IOW, he's being a politician. Latest poll shown on Israel Broadcast Authority yesterday has him just over 20 points ahead of Livni, his closest rival at this point. Another thing the accelerated election portends is no attack on Iran....
