questionmark Posted March 9, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 9, 2008 Violent storm will batter Britain within hours By Gary Cleland Last Updated: 7:06pm GMT 09/03/2008 Government officials met this evening to discuss the threat of a storm it is feared will devastate swathes of Britain tomorrow. Floods, violent winds and torrential downpours are predicted to cause chaos after weather conditions combined to create an "exceptional" storm. Winds of up to 80mph, rain and hailstones will batter the country, damaging buildings, uprooting trees and cutting power supplies. Forecasters have warned people to stay indoors, avoid coastal areas and only drive if absolutely necessary. This evening an emergency meeting was held at Whitehall to plan a response. Ministers were not due to take part, although the Prime Minister is thought to have been briefed afterwards by telephone. Severe weather warnings are in place for the whole of England, Wales and Northern Ireland and central and southern Scotland. The south of England will take the heaviest battering. The Environment Agency issued severe flood warnings across Devon and Cornwall, as well as six flood warnings and 31 flood watches. The Gremlin Posted March 10, 2008 #8 Share Posted March 10, 2008 (edited) it has already begun.... high winds, lashing rain I expect to see newsreels of canoists helping old ladies in wellies up the high street, sandbags and other innefectual hasty precautions falling down and being washed away, stranded cars, blown-down trees imbedded in posh housing, and busy emergency services...even the army called in to lend a hand... ...or we might just have to go to work on a dreary, wet, and windy monday morning...booo "Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks! Rage! Blow! You cataracts and hurricanoes, spout Till you have drenched our steeples, drowned the cocks! c-o-c-k-s You sulphurous and thought-executing fires, Vaunt-couriers to oak-cleaving thunderbolts, Singe my white head! And thou, all shaking thunder, Smite flat the thick rotundity o' the world! (King Lear, Act 3 sc.2) edit: Im surprised the swearword gizmo let me get away with cocks! Guest Lottie Posted March 10, 2008 #10 Share Posted March 10, 2008 I am so tired.. Got woken up a few hours ago by the wind howling outside, sounded like a train at times, and the rain on the windows. Think it was made worse by the fact the windows in the house are old Victorian sash windows... no double glazing for me. It's lovely and sunny now although the wind is quite blustery. We are due for more of the same later on this afternoon.

An_Observer Posted March 10, 2008 #15 Share Posted March 10, 2008 i live on the south east coast of cornwall, where if you believe all the hype the storm was going to be at it's worse, yes, it has been windy yes, it has rained but did we really need all these severe weather warnings? all it does is get people panicking, i had two phone calls early this morning, making sure i hadn't been blown away the rough sea is cool though i think people forgot this is supposed to be winter and we do get the odd storm now and again

Moon Monkey Posted March 10, 2008 #20 Share Posted March 10, 2008 I wonder what news the government will bury today while everyones eyes are on 'the great storm of 2008'. Chemical, keep the patio chair incident quiet or your premiums will go up. Whats the betting that even though no-one hears of anyone really affected the insurance companies estimate losses in the trillions and use it as an excuse to up everyones policies ? SRCivic98 Posted March 10, 2008 #23 Share Posted March 10, 2008 haha, 10-1 says that the US government makes this an excuse why the gas prices soar up near $4.00 or more a gallon. Gas right now is a national average of $3.20 gallon and is expected to go up another .30 or .40 before the end of the month. Well, forget buying a home no a days because we have to spend all the money on buying gas to get back home with. Stock markets are falling dragstically and economies are failiing in many towns and cities. Hmmm...someone's wallet must be getting fat somewhere because places are building houses left and right (can't sell them), building so-called "new jobs" (won't hire anyone that can be useful or that are legal or won't pay anyone other than minimum wage which is like $6.50+) but wait? oh yeah! the businesses are also laying people off or going across seas or to mexico too! Yep, looks like we've got such a bright future upon us. WAHAHAHA!!!! Good luck everyone in the months and years to come, We're all going to need it.
