Vanishing People

This is probably the scariest thing I'v ever read in my life if it is true.

I apologize if this is in the wrong place.

Is it possible a person can be here one minute and

then totally disappear the next, never to be seen or heard from again?

There are those who would say yes for they claim to be witnesses to just

such a phenomenon. But where do these disappearing people GO? How is it

they seem to defy the very laws of nature as we know them? Sometimes

logic cannot explain away an event, and we like to label it a mystery.

Perhaps one day we'll have answers, but for now we are only shrouded in

questions.

On June 29, 1968, the Purdue Aviation Corporation

charter flight was carrying 23 passengers from Kankakee, Illinois to a

national Lion's Club convention in Dallas, Texas. It was a clear summer

day without a cloud in the sky. Somewhere over Rolla, Missouri, Jerrold

I. Potter excused himself to use the restroom and proceeded to make his

way to the rear tail section of the plane. Mrs. Potter watched her

husband walk down the aisle as he stopped to briefly chat with James

Schaive, president of a Lion's Club in Ottawa, Illinois. She then turned

to watch the beautiful scenery below. She never saw her husband again,

dead OR alive. After a few minutes the plane seemed to shudder for

only a few seconds and as it seemed to be only passing turbulence, no

one paid it much attention. But when Mr. Potter hadn't returned after

what had seemed an undue length of time Mrs. Potter grew concerned. She

asked a stewardess to please check the lavatory for her husband. At

about the same time, pilot Miguel Raul Cabeza noticed one of the "DOOR

OPEN" warning lights was flashing. He asked the co-pilot Roy Bacus to

investigate. Not wanting to cause concern among the passengers, Bacus

calmly walked to the rear of the plane. On the way, the same stewardess

Mrs. Potter had spoken with informed Mr. Bacus a passenger may be

missing. The co-pilot surveyed the rear and found that indeed the exit

door near the lavatory was slightly ajar, the same door the flashing

warning light had indicated. Since the DC-3 wasn't pressurized, the

cracked door hadn't caused any noticeable problems. Mr. Bacus found a

chain used to keep the emergency door closed lying on the ground. He

then reported his findings to the captain who speculated that when the

plane was shaken, Mr. Potter had probably fallen against the door and

when the safety chain broke, fallen out of the aircraft. But in a later

report, it was noted that just because the chain had broken, the

cumbersome emergency door handle still needed to be turned 180 degrees,

and while this particular door handle was often a little harder to budge

than the other hatchways, it would have been even harder to open in

flight. No one had seen Mr. Potter fall, nor did they hear a scream or

even any kind of commotion. One person said, "..it was as if he just

vanished. One minute he was there, the next he was gone." Did Mr.

Potter commit suicide then? Friends and family firmly rule that

possibility out. He was, by all accounts, a happy person with a

comfortable life and good friends. So what DID happen to Jerrold I.

Potter? After making the discovery of the chain, the captain requested

permission to land, and did so in Springfield, Missouri. An intensely

thorough search was made for Mr. Potter along the DC-3's flight path,

but his body was never found, nor were any clues as to what might have

happened.

Next is an account of a man who disappeared in full

view of 2 witnesses in 19th century England. It was September 3, 1873. A

man named James Worson had accepted a challenge to race in record time

from the town of Leamington to the town of Coventry, a 20-mile trek. He

had been basting of his foot skills and then asked to prove them, so

with sporting good spirits he set about to do just that. Two

friends, Hammerson Burns and Barham Wise, followed behind in a

horse-drawn gig. Burns brought alonghis camera. As the three traversed

down the country road all were in high spirits. The day couldn't have

been prettier. Worson was never out of their sight and would often turn

around while running to exchange some friendly words with the two

riders. Running in the middle of the road, Worson suddenly appeared to

stumble and pitch forward, having time enough for only one short,

piercing scream. Wise later said, "It was the most ghastly sound ether

of us had ever heard." But as Worson pitched forward with that terrible

cry, instead of falling to the ground as he appeared to about to have

done, he completely and totally vanished in mid-fall before ever

striking the ground. The road itself told the story and Wise took the

pictures to prove it. There, in the soft dirt, were Worson's footprints.

They led down the middle of the road, looked as if the runner stumbled,

and there they disappeared. When the two men returned to Leamington with

their incredible story, search parties were formed to scour the entire

area from Leamington to Coventry, but not one shred of evidence was ever

found of James Worson, nor would there ever be in the years to follow.

The bloodhounds used in the search were strangely reluctant to approach

the spot where Worson disappeared. He was never seen or heard from

again. At least, not in his old earthly body, for if reports are to be

believed, for many years after James Worson's tragic and unbelievable

disappearance, a ghostly runner with an eerie green glow would be seen

making the trek from Leamington to Coventry on black lonely nights on

the empty road. What happened to James Worson remains a mystery to this

day. What made him scream so terribly, did he see something the others

did not?

Incredible as that story may be, it is also not

unique, though neither is it common. A very similar event occurred in

America about 7 years later. It was September 23, 1880. David Lang, a

successful farmer, was walking across a field in front of his home in

Gallin, Tennessee. His two children were out front playing in the yard,

and his wife was also outside. She was approaching a horse-drawn buggy

carrying Judge August Peck and his brother-in-law. David Lang smiled and

waved to the visitors as he started walking towards them. But he never

reached his destination. After taking several steps, in full view of 5

witnesses, he literally disappeared mid-stride. His wife let out a

terrible scream and ran to where he had last been seen, shortly followed

by the Judge and his brother-in-law. There was absolutely no trace of

David Lang. He simply vanished, never to be seen again. Massive

search parties were formed and lanterns could be seen swinging all

through the night. The next morning, a county surveyor arrived and

searched the area Lang had last been seen, hoping to find a cave or

pothole he had slipped into. But no such thing was found, and he

declared the land to be firmly supported by a thick strata of limestone.

But the search continued for months. Mrs. Lang vehemently resisted any

suggestion of a funeral or even a memorial service, she asked only that

the townspeople continue to pray for her husbands return. On an

April evening in 1881, the Langs daughter, Sarah, ran sobbing into the

house saying there was a "ring" around the spot her father had

disappeared. When Mrs. Lang went to investigate, Sarah said she could

clearly hear her father begging for help in a tortured voice, but it

soon faded away into silence. Mrs. Lang did not hear the voice, but she

did find a perfect circle of dried grass some 20 feet in diameter at the

same spot her husband had last been seen. This was enough for her, and

packing up their belongings, Mrs. Lang and her 2 children moved away

from the farmhouse for good. So what DID happen to David Lang? And

to the people in the above stories as well. Why were their bodies never

found, and just HOW DOES a person vanish into thin air?

This is the scariest thing I have ever heard of in my life. Anyone have an idea of what this is/causes this? Thoughts and ideas are appreciated.

Don't put too much stock in them. Sure the stories are impressive, but the actual events vary quite a bit from the accounts. I recommend looking up David Lang. You'll find that this famous disappearance was anything but.

Um...well, I have a small story I am leary of telling. Mainly because I don't believe it myself. LOL!

But I know two people who SWEAR they were transported. Now, they are preachers and they say God did it for them. They were driving somewhere and hours from where they needed to be. They say one second they were there and the next second they were where they needed to be.

Now, I didn't see it....so I cant say I believe it. I also know enough about one of them to not believe a thing he says. The other one I would have a hard time believing he would lie. So....there you have it. And I guess if anyone had seen them they would have been there one second and gone the next.

I don't know.....but there you have it.

maybe a small worm hole? i dont really know much about wormholes, but i know that they are theoretical 'portals' to another part of the universe/world or another place in time, (ive seen them talked about in time travel also)

wormholes if i remember right are said to also be able to transport you to another universe, so maybe these people are the first time/space/universe travellers haha, well........... maybe

interesting stories, very strange

I like the stories but don't know that I can believe them.. Even the one with the witnesses, people can be made to believe things even when they didn't happen. Our minds can really get to us like that.

Interesting...for the first one I bet that guy thought he was going into the bathroom and opened the wrong door....fell out of the plane....the door closed due to the air flow at the high speed.... the other 2 stories are strange..the 2nd I have no idea I was thinking a hole in the ground for the 3rd... but I dont believe people can just disapear into thin air....... hmm.gif

This is probably the scariest thing I'v ever read in my life if it is true.

The David Lang story used to keep me awake nights as a child. I read it first in an old Frank Edwards book, and the idea that one could just be walking along and suddenly vanish horrified me. It was both a relief and a disappointment to me to see it disproven.

http://anomalyinfo.com/articles/sa00010.shtml has the details. Follow the little links below the title to read the whole thing.

Regarding the Potter fellow who vanished from the airplane, I'd have to agree that he probably had a moment of brain failure and mistook the hatch for the restroom. Everyone in their life has moments where they simply fail to pay attention to what they're doing. He had the misfortune to do it under circumstances where the results were fatal.

Yep, the David Lang story is just fiction.

As for the guy on the plane... I don't think suicide should be ruled out just because the guy seemed happy with his life. It's pretty well documented that people actually get pretty happy and upbeat once they decide to kill themselves, simply because they've finally made up their mind. And feelings like that are really easy to hide, even from those closest to you. And of course mistaking the door for something that it wasn't is also very plausible. This just doesn't really seem like a case of someone just vanishing. If the door was still sealed, I might consider it, otherwise, no.

The runner sort of sounds like a story on the same level as David Lang, very urban legend, "campfire" story-like.

If one likes mysterious disappearances from moving vehicles, it's hard to beat the case of James Tetford. He vanished from a bus in 1949. Fifteen people got on the bus, and fourteen got off. Tetford's luggage and bus schedule were all that was left. This came in the middle of an entire series of disappearances in the Bennington, VT area in the late 1940s, now largely forgotten. The majority of the victims vanished while walking in the woods, so it's possible to speculate on a serial killer, or perhaps a wild bear or the like. Tetford's a bit more difficult to explain away.

There's an article about the disappearances at http://www.virtualvermonter.com/specials/benntriangle.htm

Anyone read Time Storms by Jenny Randles, these stories sound just like the ones it her book. Her theory is that faults can occur in space time and move people or make them disappear. There are numerous stories in that book of people going somewhere and hours inexplicably vanishing, sometimes they are missing for days.

Do you guys believe any of these stories are true?

Tetford's one that bothers me. In most cases where someone disappears, it's possible to speculate rationally. We may never actually know what happened, but one or more plausible scenaria can be constructed. Not so with Tetford.

Fourteen people agreed that he was on that bus when the last leg of the journey began. When the bus arrived, he was missing. I suppose it's possible that he could have thrown himself out the window while no-one was looking, but it doesn't seem too likely. If nothing else, it was December in Vermont. People would have remarked on a bus window being open. It's at least as improbable that all of his fourteen fellow passengers bore him some mortal grudge, and conspired to do away with him. It's possible as well that all fourteen could have been honestly mistaken about him being on the bus for that last leg of the journey, but that's not too likely either. If you beleive that, then you're left not only with the mystery of Tetford going missing (albeit this time from the bus station, a more likely proposition), but also how fourteen witnesses could all make the same mistake.

In the end we're left with an old man who apparently vanished from a moving bus. That's not to say that there may not be some completely mundane explanation, but if there is, I doubt that it's likely to ever be known.

What about alien abduction? Many people who witness aliens/spacecraft have a sort of amnesia. Perhaps the disappearing person was abducted and the witnesses just blocked the chunk of time out when the big spaceship sucked up their friend. Maybe the alien craft was invisible?

Not sure if I believe in wormhole's or people vanishing - but who's to say it's not possible, it may be.

However, the second story happened in the 19th century, if he had of vanished into a wormhole and ended up miles away, or even in a different country, how on earth would that man be able to communicate to his family what had happened nor would anyone believe him where he eventually turned up, they would think him barmy.

Interesting topic.

I read lots of stories like this - some turn out to be like urban legends and based on earlier accounts. I used to think as a child, that if I went into a certain corner of the room I would vanish. Wonder what happened to Lord Lucan though.

The story of the guy in the airplane doesn't look too paranormal to me. he either jumped from the airplane or he mistakenly opened the door and fell. The second one just looks like the typical case of premeditated murder. Two guys alive, both saw the other guy "disappear", yeah sure ;)

There is a book by John Pinkney that talks about Lord Lucan and what happened and apparently a detective in Australia swore he was living here.

I say what about instances like the Mary Celeste what happened to those people.

There was a instance here in Australia a few years back where an Asian fishing boat ended up like that too everyone just dissapeared. That shat freaks me out I must admit.

Wow, weird stories. It kind of reminds me of a real life situation. My husband and my dad worked with a woman a couple years back. Her father is now missing. He was a happy, much loved older family man/grandpa who just seemed to vanish. He was driving to see his daughter last summer. He called her from his cell phone when he was half way there. He said he had to make a stop at a convenience store, I think for some ciggarettes. He never made it to see his daughter. His car was found the next day in a Kingston parking lot, undisturbed with all his meds, overnight bag and money in the car. There have been searches for him. There are no witnesses and no one has ever found any evidence leading to where he is. Its really sad because we kind of know the family.

  • 1 month later...

I have my own story but seems to lie so far out of believability, that even I have a hard time believing it but can come to no other option. About 6 years ago I was doing my ritual of meditation, to relax myself and sleep deeply. Suddenly I wasn't there anymore, but I was 10 years earlier, sitting in highschool, at my desk in speech class. I was confused and the world around me looked hazy. Everything looked almost to be moving in slow motion. My hands and head movements themselves seemed mired in molasses. The teacher was in front doing her thing, and I looked down at the desk to see blank paper. I very slowly raised my hand and began writing my address to my home 10 years later. As I was writing the numbers, this blurry world seemed to ripple. The more it rippled, the more my hands shaked. I had only finished the numbers, and I felt like my mind and body was twisting, and sat up in my bed with an excruciating headache. Inside that headache I found I could remember from my memories of spacing out in class and writing numbers that seemed to mean nothing to me. I never remembered it until that moment almost as if the memory was just made, and had always been at the same time. I attribute that occurence to be the cause of what has happened to me ever since then. Every now and then I'll see a ripple and things around me will change. Usually it is something small like a picture changing, or someone's clothes changing. Sometimes I see absolutely nothing in my vicinity change. But, now things in history that I've known and been taught since I was a child, have changed. Some conversations I have had with people, are only remembered by me. People I know personal information about, don't even know who I am. The small things are no big deal, but it's the big things that worry me. Even my writing this, may vanish. So I propose this possibility. When I did that 6 years ago, I unhinged myself, so that now, randomly I switch probabilities. Because it is me, no one else can see this. So it is possible that could be what has happened to the people that vanish right in front of others. The person that vanishes is slipping into another possibility. I've tried to logically think it through in hopes that maybe I only have a fractured psyche, but when I know things about others that only a close friend could know, it makes me wonder. An example is there was a hurricane that destroyed Walt Disney World. It had been on the news, and I had lengthy conversations with people about it because everyone was scarred by this since Disney World is somewhat iconic. Co-workers, friends, and even my wife all talked about it. A week later, no one remembered it but me. I was able to tell them everything else that happened throughout the week, all the way down to tv shows on tv and watching them with people. But no one remembered the conversations about Disney World being destroyed. Indeed it stands today intact. No one remembers seeing me blank out in that week either. I had seen a ripple the same day I found out it was intact. I have learned not to worry about ripples unless I directly see something change so I blew it off. So the ripple had to be my shifting possibilities. I've talked to others about this and they think I'm nuts, but then who wouldn't since no one else has seen it. The only person who would ever see it is the person it happens to.

I think that's what happens to people who vanish. They've somehow gotten unhinged from this reality and slipped into another. On the outside that is the only way I can see it looking.

Does anyone else see a link between these stories and the rather famous set of urban legends that tell of the "Phantom Hitchhiker" (Person driving on a road sees a hitchhikers, picks them up and the passenger disappears before getting to the destination and is later determined to be someone who died)?

It seems we are left with a few possibilities here : These stories are new iterations of that urban legend, or that urban legend may have more truth than anyone suspects...

As an add on to my conclusions, I think what I did by attempting to write down my future address in the past, I inadvertently began altering the timeline. I think this is why I was forced back so violently and became unhinged. So my only advice for anyone who may experience something somewhat similar. When you see this, under no circumstances should you act out anything that could alter your future. The consequences may be irreparable.

As an aside. I should note that the timing when this happens 16 years ago was the beginning of when I began to exhibit other traits. So maybe that is the key. One can only alter or go back to, events in their own lifetime to which they were in personal attendence.

Meiliken, I can't tell whether you're being serious, or pretending that you're Billy Pilgrim in Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse 5," who also became "unstuck in time." If you're serious, that is, believe these weird things are happening to you and around you, I don't know what to say. Have you sought . . . professional help? I'm not saying you're crazy (although it sure sounds like you are!), but if you haven't at least had a full physical examination, including a brain scan, then you may be ignoring the growth of a brain tumor, which can cause hallunications. Don't take any chances with your health, friend, especially not your mental health! One's body exists in the world, but one lives in the mind!
