Police archive photographs

Leading circus elephants along the street, driving to work in a horse and cart or sending a message via carrier pigeon are duties which have long since disappeared from modern day policing.

But as these photographs show they were all in a day's work for bobbies on the beat during the last century.

The bygone images, which date back to 1904, give a fascinating insight into the duties of police officers at a time when political correctness and health and safety had yet to make an impact on the thin blue line.

They reveal just how modern technology has dramatically altered the way modern police forces work.
