Can anyone identify this bug?

My wife and I live in upstate New York and this happened to be on her leg in our livingroom. I've seen many bugs around here, but I've never seen anything like this one. Would anyone know?

Hey sorry guys, I'm new to this forum. Was trying to do it from my Iphone but the file size was too big to upload until I got home.

Looks like some sort of katydid or katydid nymph.

That's what I originally thought. The red head of it and the patterns on it's back are strange though. We have katydids all around here and they have a triangular back. If it's a nymph it would be cool to find since it's back is flat.

Put it in a dark place and see if it trills.

Interesting.

Looks a lot like an assassin bug?

I might recommend you post and ask on Reddit - they identified a spider for me in a day, and I'd never been there before, I signed up JUST to see if they could do it.

Clearly an advanced scout from the Insectoid mother ship that is currently draining energy from the sun to prepare for the arrival of Nibiru and the enslavement of humanity to mine for gold for.... reasons.

To me it looks like some kind of a mantis. Maybe a walking stick? Or perhaps an onnamispous!
