metaphysical Posted October 8, 2011 #1 Share Posted October 8, 2011 The magnetic field of Earth started weakening and shows that it will reverse. It seems that are to many considerations. It will happen approximately in a 1000 years and all the evidence show that will be transformed nil magnetic field for some time 1000 years. That means all will be exposed to solar storms. This situation we don't know what problems will bring. Electronics are very sensitive to solar storms and also all the living beings. This must be solved from scientists and the specialists for these matters we will have this in our life. I don't know what will happen but is the reason of Mayan calendar. Probably they knew something. That we will see to be continued...
Englishgent Posted October 8, 2011 #2 Share Posted October 8, 2011 The magnetic field has reversed many times throughout the Earth's history for which there is sufficient evidence. However, this is the first time I have heard that there will be no magnetic field for 1000yrs.. I am not saying you are wrong, just that I have never heard this before. One would assume that as long as the Earth's iron core is spinning, there will always be a magnetic field and that the reversal will not affect this. If we had no magnetic field for 1000yrs, it is likely that the solar winds from the sun would blow a considerable amount of the earth's atmosphere away. There is no evidence as far as I am aware that this has occured in previous reversals. As for the Mayans, they just ran out of room on their calendar. You can only fit so much onto one stone lol . It's more likely the end of one era and the start of the next. Maybe one day we will discover Mayan calendar number two

In the past 200 years the Earth magnetic field decreased 15%. So this is a sign of going through reversal. And we are overdue 780000 years since the last one. Usually occuring every 250000 years. Is something that most probably will happen. I don't believe anything will happen at year 2012 concerning the Mayan calendar
Bendy Demon Posted October 8, 2011 #4 Share Posted October 8, 2011 Just because an "expert" opens their mouth doesn't mean they are accurate. I do think, based on what I have read, that the magnetic filed will be "spotty" and there will be multiple mini "poles" but no magnetic field for a thousand years? Nah..I am not sure of that one. Earth had magnetic reversals happening at multiple time before and life still flourish on earth, so i don't think that this process leaves the earth without any magnetic protection because without magnetic field would mean earth looking like mars in matter of years and decades. I tend to believe that we will had multiples "mini poles" as the pole change sides from north to south and vice versa!
__R_____ Posted October 9, 2011 #6 Share Posted October 9, 2011 yea, the magnetic field reversal is nothing to worry about. Plus the idea is always dramatized to an extreme that is not at all indicated by any of the science we have about it. One thing I have heard mentioned is the possibility of changes in DNA from increased exposure to solar radiation - a few fringe scientists have said there is a correlation between sudden changes in evolution and a weak magnetic field. I don't think so but sounds interesting.

What evidence are you talking about that supports zero magnetic field for 1000 yrs? I've never seen anything about that.

You are right this statement from Nasa that suggest that http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2003/29dec_magneticfield/ We never experienced such thing and I believe it might affect DNA as well. I don't know but enviromental changes might be a reason for evolution.
