Well..a cusp on one of my molars broke off to day while I was eating dinner.

The good news -if you could call it good- is that I never knew it until later when I was feeling my teeth with my tongue and noticed something odd; when I got home I took a peek in the mirror and discovered the missing piece.  Furhtermore it no longer hurts. I brushed it really well and there is no pain.
If I am lucky and can get into a dentist then there is a good chance they can fill in the broken part with a dental resin.

It's kind of my fault anyways, the molar occasionally gave me problems ever since I had it filled as a child and several months ago when I was chewing on a Hershey's nugget, I had a pain in the afore mentioned molar. Since then it gave me problems, chiefly hurting whenever I chewed on it.
SO....as much as I dislike dentists I need to get in soon.

As someone who has a family history that landed hard on their teeth, I feel for you.
I dislike going to the dentist as well, but the sooner you fix this, the better chance you have at keeping the tooth.

I'll keep you in my thoughts. (Nice non-denom/non-insulting non-assuming well wishing)

How much do dentists charge for a filling in the U.S. ? Australian dentists remind me of the highwayman Dick Turpin.  <_<

Thanks RedSquirrel for the well wishing. I am not looking forward to this but it has to be done.

@Habitat: I haven't been to the dentist is awhile so I don't know what the going rates are so naturally I am gonna find out when I see him next week.
Unfortunately I do not know the extent of damage to my tooth, I don't see any remaining tooth directly under the break so I fear there may be a root in the gum but I feel nothing right now.
I just am worried it could end up becoming minor dental surgery.:(

I have been keeping it clean as I can and using anti-septic mouthwash a few times a day, especially after anything sweet.
Well..lesson here is that I should have had this taken care of long ago but I figure that the tooth was damaged when I was a kid when the dentist was drilling a cavity and years (and years) later the fracture completed itself.

As long as the underlying supporting structure of the tooth is fine and the roots are ok, then all you may need is a dental crown. Getting a tooth crowned really isn't that bad (I have 2 crowns). One tooth I broke on a piece of mental in of all things a salad. The other one just chipped due to having a large filling (we had no flouride in our toothpaste when I was young). It's best to just go to the Dentist and deal with stuff...you don't want it to get any worse.

Well..I did go to the dentist today and he gave me tow choices; either fill it in with dental amalgam or have a crown.
The crown may be better but I am going to have a second opinion on this. The rest of the tooth is just fine so I want to find out if I can get a partial crown.

The financial damage on the first visit is 770+ dollars for one crown so I am going to check around to see what others say and charge.

Wow that's a lot of money, if you use the NHS it's £48 no mater how many fillings you have, i think there's a maximum charge of £199 for other work, i'v had many porcelain and gold crowns on my molars because i grind my teeth when i'm asleep and fetch my fillings out, i've got used to wearing a night guard now so it rarely happens.
Thank god i'm an athiest.

Hey, do what I did ( twice ).........Now I am showing how stupid I can be...And no, don't do it.

First one broke, did not hurt, no problem......Wait a year or so for some major pain, than go to the dentist and get a root canal.

Second one, same thing, only a year or so later, get it pulled , in 4 pieces.

I wish I liked Dentists a little more.....

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one here who doesn't like dentists.

NHS dentists are hard to come by. I'm registered with one who's private with fees to match! It cost me almost £500 once for root canal treatment on a tooth due to an infection. He's very good though I will say, but I'm terrified of going and always have been.

My six monthly check-up is due next week and I'm dreading it already  :(  Stupid I know but I can't help it.

I hate to be the "Devil's Advocate" (I'm going to post pro-Dentist here). It's really better to just get a broken tooth crowned. Why? because of the very sequence of events Sakari just posted. I'm old, I've have never had a root canal or a pulled tooth (except for my wisdom teeth due to no room). I do have two crowns and found the process to be quite tolerable, but a bit pricey. However, I intend to keep my teeth until I check out of this life. And, in order to do that one has to go to the Dentist and deal with any problems as they develop.

I broke a back molar  three days ago.. It was one that was temporally filled  until  my pregnancy is over  .. I was due to have it capped and fixed  after  I have my baby.. But darn thing broke at the corner.. So this Wednesday  I have a new appointment to go in and see my dentist..

Thing is  because I am pregnant, there is not much she can do.. only refill and cap it off  until my pregnancy is over .. I am going to later pay for a proper white crown ..It is costly but I wont have it any other way...My dentist has already been informed of this... The molar might be at the back, but I still want a white crown or cap ...

Good thing about going to her is, she never really keeps you waiting ...She is polite and I like her ...

It makes a difference when you can go to a dentist you like. The one I used to have was very abrupt, I never liked him very much. The guy I have now is so much nicer.

I know.. because I have had 3 other dentists that were horrible.. No personality.. rotty wind bags....I hated them

Some doctors  are like that too...more so female doctors..  These last 4 weeks I have faced 2 female doctors with a personality  of a pitt bull on smack...Dry attitude ....You get them everywhere

That part was funny lol

I've got no complaints about the Doctors in the practice I go to, but....once many years ago when I had an appointment with the gynecologist at the hospital. The guy I saw started off by asking me a load of questions which he noted down as I answered him. Well that was ok except while he was doing that he kept picking his nose! and he did that the whole time we sat there, I thought he'd never stop!   I can laugh at it now, but it wasn't at all funny at the time. I couldn't wait to get finished and out of there!

Good luck with your tooth Ryu, whatever you decide to have done.
