Still Waters Posted September 12, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 12, 2009 A rare pink grasshopper has been found by a schoolboy taking part in a nature trail. The insect was found by 11-year-old Daniel Tate who thought it was a flower until he saw it jump and then he realised it was a grasshopper. The insect was later identified by wildlife officers as an adult female common green grasshopper, which has been born pink. Read more...

Owlscrying Posted September 13, 2009 #3 Share Posted September 13, 2009 Wonder if not being as well camouflaged, the color makes them more prone to being spotted by their enemies.

kyle33kt Posted September 13, 2009 #5 Share Posted September 13, 2009 Hi i have seen one of these grasshoppers years ago when i was mowing the lawn. The one i saw was bright red rather than pink tho. When i found one i just thought it was a different kind of grasshopper didnt know they were extremely rare.
Hissie Sola Posted September 13, 2009 #6 Share Posted September 13, 2009 Wonder if not being as well camouflaged, the color makes them more prone to being spotted by their enemies. Probably. That's probably why they are so rare...they don't get a chance to pass on their genes... It's pretty though

Siara Posted September 13, 2009 #9 Share Posted September 13, 2009 It's really pretty (the link has a pic of the pink insect) but you can see why this is not going to be a successful evolutionary adaptation. Any insect eatting bird could spot it a mile off.
Siara Posted September 13, 2009 #10 Share Posted September 13, 2009 Do they have red blood? Is it an albino? How can it be pink? Where did the different pigment come from?
