B.C. woman's bingo cash disappears

An elderly woman's winnings at a bingo hall in Burnaby, B.C., went missing while she was taken to hospital or in the emergency ward, her grandson claimed Wednesday.

Shane Ballard said he initially thought Pat Grant, 79, suffered a stroke at the Boardwalk Gaming Centre Sunday and then someone reached into her purse and took her money while she was lying incoherent outside in the parking lot.

That was what Ballard told some media outlets early in the week, but he now says there are quite a few twists and turns as to what really happened to his grandmother.

Grant was enjoying an afternoon of bingo when she suffered a stroke inside the facility — not outside in the parking lot, Ballard said.

Staff at the bingo hall immediately called an ambulance for Grant, cashed out her cards and, with paramedics as witnesses, placed $275 in winnings in her purse, Ballard said.

She was then rushed to hospital and sometime during that ride, or in the Royal Columbian Hospital's emergency ward, Grant's money went missing, he claimed.

Burnaby RCMP on Wednesday also believe that is what happened and are investigating the case, according to Ballard.

"I'm not here to place any blame on anybody," Ballard said. "But the thing is the money that she won and the money she had in her wallet was stolen."
