U.S. press freedom improves

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Press freedom has improved in the United States in the last year and the country jumped 20 places to No. 20 on a 2009 international ranking by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) released on Tuesday.

The media watchdog said the assumption of the presidency by Barack Obama in January brought a new approach in Washington after eight years under President George W. Bush, while some European countries fell in the group's Press Freedom Index.

European countries hold the top 13 spots, led by Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway and Sweden. France fell eight spots to No. 43, Slovakia dropped 37 places to No. 44 and Italy fell five spots to No. 49. (same source)

Press freedom? Freedom to do what, exactly? Freedom to be completely biased, freedom to openly support leftist people, groups and causes, freedom to call millions of ordinary Americans a bunch of bitter, angry, unAmerican, fear-mongering, Nazi "tea-baggers"?

I know, I know, I'm talking about the mainstream media, not the "press" in general.

Hmmmmm... try telling this reporter that press freedom has improved while they turn off his mic after questioning Al Gore on errors in his film An Unconvenient Truth

Former Vice President Al Gore who never allows journalists questions was giving his first Q & A in 4 years. The results were surprising and alarming for the future of journalism.
