this parable in Matt 18 tends to stick with me. Now if only I lived to its lesson.

"Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, 'Pay what you owe.' So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. Then his master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers,[l] until he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart."

My favourite of all time is Ephesians 2:8-10:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

  • 2 weeks later...

I saw this the other day. Job 1;21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither; the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away;blessed be the name of the LORD.

This coming after Job receives devastating news of the death of his children, among other things. Incredible insight and humble wisdom from a man afflicted with true hardship. Praise God.

I love it because to know that God gave his only son to be brutally beaten for the sins that WE do.

He didn't give him to be brutally beaten and that actually sounds more cruel than it does anything. I don't think anyone could really believe the way that the sons of men treated the Soveriegn Michael(Jesus).

Since I can't really just express my feelings in one verse from the Bible since there are so many good ones and usually in a row I think I'll share entire chapters since I believe them to be extremely far reaching.

1 But false prophets also arose among the people, as false teachers will also be among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction.

2 Many will follow their immoral ways, and as a result, the way of the truth will be maligned.

3 In covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words: whose sentence now from of old doesn't linger, and their destruction will not slumber.

4 For if God didn't spare angels when they sinned, but cast them down to Tartarus, and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;

5 and didn't spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood on the world of the ungodly;

6 and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly;

7 and delivered righteous Lot, who was very distressed by the lustful life of the wicked

8 (for that righteous man dwelling among them, was tormented in his righteous soul from day to day with seeing and hearing lawless deeds):

9 the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment;

10 but chiefly those who walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise authority. Daring, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries;

11 whereas angels, though greater in might and power, don't bring a railing judgment against them before the Lord.

12 But these, as unreasoning creatures, born natural animals to be taken and destroyed, speaking evil in matters about which they are ignorant, will in their destroying surely be destroyed,

13 receiving the wages of unrighteousness; people who count it pleasure to revel in the daytime, spots and blemishes, reveling in their deceit while they feast with you;

14 having eyes full of adultery, and who can't cease from sin; enticing unsettled souls; having a heart trained in greed; children of cursing;

15 forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of wrongdoing;

16 but he was rebuked for his own disobedience. A mute donkey spoke with a man's voice and stopped the madness of the prophet.

17 These are wells without water, clouds driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness has been reserved forever.

18 For, uttering great swelling words of emptiness, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by licentiousness, those who are indeed escaping from those who live in error;

19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for a man is brought into bondage by whoever overcomes him.

20 For if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in it and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

21 For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.

22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb, "The dog turns to his own vomit again," and "the sow that has washed to wallowing in the mire."

Well, since PA already posted MY favorite passage I will post my favorite verse:

but those who hope in the LORD

will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint.

Isaiah 40:31

This verse got me through Basic Training. I sprained my ankle during the second week of training, and I was given two choices:

1. Go home and recover for three weeks and come back to restart basic :no: (I had already gone through two weeks of HELL there was NO WAY I was going to voluntarily go through that again)

2. Take 24 hours to recover and grab my crutches and go back out there and prove I could get through.

I chose option 2. And during that 24 hour recovery period, I found that verse.

Genesis 9:20-21

And Noah was teh first man of the soil; he planted a vineyard. When he drank from the wine, he became drunk and exposed himselfe in the middle of his tent.

Translation from The Schocken bible, vol 1

Now this might sound weird as a favorite quote, but it helps remind me that God can use anyone to do his work in this world, and often times will use people with great vices and faults. Noah- a drunk, Abraham - a liar and a man who allowed his wife to be used by another man to save his own skin, david, murder, adulterer, Moses Murderer.

Its God who make us do great things, in spite of ourselves.

As Luther said, we are both :innocent: and :devil:

I have always liked this one, although i do have several favorite ;)

Psalm 46

1 God is our refuge and strength,

an ever-present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way

and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam

and the mountains quake with their surging.

Selah

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

the holy place where the Most High dwells.

5 God is within her, she will not fall;

God will help her at break of day.

6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;

he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD Almighty is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Selah

8 Come and see the works of the LORD,

the desolations he has brought on the earth.

9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth;

he breaks the bow and shatters the spear,

he burns the shields with fire.

10 "Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in the earth."

11 The LORD Almighty is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Selah

The shortest verse in the bible is John 11:35 Jesus wept.

A very brief statement but one can discern from that statement and write an entire book explaining it.

The Book of Satan 1:2-4

Open your eyes that you may see, Oh men of mildewed

minds, and listen to me ye bewildered millions!2

For I stand forth to challenge the wisdom of the world;

to interrogate the "laws" of man and of "God"!3

I request reason for your golden rule and ask the why

and wherefore of your ten commandments. 4

those are some of my favorite verses

So many I love. But, I must say psalms.

PSALM 23:1

The LORD is I shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
