The Telegraph said:

A referendum on Britain’s relationship with the European Union would be “silly” and is only of interest to “a few extreme nationalist politicians,” Kenneth Clarke has said.

The Justice Secretary launched a sustained attack on advocates of a popular vote on Europe, which he described as “a total irrelevance” that would create turmoil and undermine Britain’s economic credibility.

In a BBC Radio Four interview, he dismissed those seeking a referendum as “frenzied eurosceptics”.

The guy is a yesterday politician and should disappear quietly into retirement.

Its offensive to be told if you dont want to be part of the EU you're an extremist. After the comments he came out with when the Conservatives got elected I thought someone would have had a quiet word with him. The guy is an embaressment.

We should leave the EU, ban trade in all products we can make for ourselves, dust down the aircraft carrier, increase the build order to 5, dismantle as much socialism as we can, replace liberal values with Conservative ones and finally stand on our own two feet not as US's poodle but as a superpower in our own right.

Every nation should ban or highly tariff all products they can make for themselves.
Independence is good for all people.
Globalism has always been a suicide pact.
If one vital part crashes the whole planet goes down with it in globalism.
Nation states that are as independent as they can possibly be increase the chances of survival of many things though diversity, through not putting all of the eggs in one basket.

It is not like it was really that "voluntary", it was untenable.

Why should they not aspire to greatness? The term "Super Power" can mean many things.. .not just militarily... but could also mean economic, or cultural... England has the potential for this... Until very recently they WERE unquestionably a super power...
They could 'rise again', with good planning and national determination - it is not impossible...

So don't be so quick to disparage a peoples dreams... Or to underestimate the possibilities...

You don't rise by hanging on past dreams or by trying to build a future on past dreams: There is a reason why they are past.

Well said, the Past does not presume the Future. And why should the UK even want become a Super-Power again?

As Britain is an island and because of modern weaponary we dont need a large land army or navy.

Air supremacy would allow us to regain the top position very quickly. Its unfair on our enemies but God put us on the island for a reason. To spread Britannia around the globe.

Ken Clarke has always been pro EU and has put his foot in his month a few times already, its nothing new.

as for the UK being a superpower, just look at how we rose from the impoverished nation back in the 1400's to the nation we are today. the key to us being a superpower is the navy. just watch empire of the seas. and the influence we had upon the world.

Which you've already done - and mostly to great effect, I'd say.  There are large parts of this globe that have at least a veneer of civilization because of what Britain has done.  But you can look at America and tell easily that all good things come to an end eventually.  And I don't mean that in arrogance.  No one nation can be responsible for the globe - or force it into submission for long.....The US and GB did much good in the world to go long with the evil we brought.  Empires don't last but ideas can.
