This is a good question. I have thought about this a time or two. I am not at all afraid of death, it's the dying part that I don't like. I want a nice quick and painless death. :w00t:

If you do not die one thing is for certain, you were never alive.....

Any thoughts?

I have heard a few theories on death.

1) When you die, the last pain you feel is what you will feel for all of eternity.

2) There is heaven and hell.

3) Reincarnation.

4) Eternal sleep.

I am not so much afraid of death itself, I am afraid of not knowing. I personally believe in reincarnation. I suppose there is only one way to find out, just wait. :)

This is technically true.

To live is to one day die.

I am not afraid to die. To worry about such a thing is, I think, foolish. We all will meet our end some day. To those who have lived the way they wished, with no regrets or forgotten debts, death will be a most welcome venture.

I am not afraid to die.

Infact, i am ready to die.

This doesn't imply i wish to die in any circumstance. Just ready, because well, it is inevitable.

But i imagine if it was my time, i'd scream and holler like anyone else.

It's what may happen before you die you should be afraid of ;)

I'm frightened out of my mind about dying. It's the not knowing what happens part that I don't like. I can't believe that one day I'm just going to cease to exist, I won't be able to take a walk outside or eat my favorite food- everyday things. Five years after I'm gone, no one will even remember that I existed. I'm a control freak and I can't control the fact that someday I'm going to die... that is scarry to me!!!

I don't think about it too much, but for me, death is fearful on one level and not so fearful on the other.

Emotionally speaking, I am afraid to die, mostly out of regret - regret that I won't get to see how the future turns out, to see if humanity settles planets around other stars or destroys itself.

Rationally, I'm not really afraid of death. After all, unless you believe in an afterlife, it's not like you know that you are dead; I would imagine it to be like the dreamless anesthesia that you are put under for surgery, where you have no consciousness or comprehension of time.

No. Been dead (clinically) twice. My experience, both times, was that there was a moment of panic first, especially the first time, then pure peace. More interesting was the fact that I really didn't want to come back either time.

Also have done some oob things. The attitude with those was similar: looking back at body, I really had no feelings about it, other than not particularly wanting to get back in.

That should cause some comments.

I thinking about it constantly. It is inevitable, which brings to me a certain curiosity of myself, and my life.

For example:

If you (i) aren't afraid of death, why is it so hard for you to go speak to strangers?

" ", why am you so antisocial, so afraid of the unknown.

Yet, I welcome death with open arms. I am going to die, so live life, eh?

I'm with shadowlady, I'm frightened about "death". Not the dying part and not directly afraid of how it will be being dead, but more afraid of not being alive and exist.

And the fact that it's not something I can personally control bothers me even more :)

The most important part of being alive is the one part I cannot control, -when I will die.

I love to exist, it's all that I am, so of course it bothers me that this will end. I can't understand that for some it doesn't matter ??? Then I'm thinking you haven't really thought it through - it's not a pleasant thought.

Thats me. I don't really care about the dying part, I just don't want it to be a long drawn out painful procedure. :innocent:

I hope to have a chance to pee one last time before I die. With that eternal pain and all, this might get rid of some. As long as I get to pee, anyone can come kill me. No idea why. I just get a strange feeling of peace while urinating.

I've suddenly just got the urge to pee................... much better. I too had a strange feeling of tranquility. Odd.

I'm not afraid of dying, but I am afreaid of being killed. I would like to live out a long and natural life without it ending prematurely.

I should probably quit smoking. But damned if I don't love it.

Personally, I believe the spirit lives on after death, and that our physical shell is shed as we enter immortality. This comes of course with my Christian faith. I believe those faithful to God will spend eternity with him. And I am not saying that if you don't believe in God you are going to hell, because frankly, I don't know. I don't know who God will choose for heaven or hell. Only He can make that judgement. But as for myself, I am confident that if I remain faithful to Him, I will spend eternity with him.

And that's fine by me.

BUT, if I do ending dying because I was killed, I have but one choice of how to go out:

I want to die fighting in the Moon Wars.

Let me explain. I have it in mind that as the space race continues, there may be colonies, and rival territories over the moons surface. And if I could die doing one thing, it would be fighting a battle in space. Because I'd always be historically remembered as "The Guy who died in the moon wars".

Pretty nerdy, eh?

EDIT Good topic for a thread though. Some responses were very interesting. Cudos.

Yeah, this is a good topic. I have been thinking about it recently. I was on holiday last week and my girlfriend is absolutely terrified of flying. I was just wondering why we are so afraid of death. If we were to crash it would have been quick and relatively painless. I personally have been unafraid of dying for a while, but I wasn't always like that. My reading and research into things like astral projection, near-death experiences, reincarnation and other things has given me a firm belief in the immortality of our souls. (I've got some past-life regression CD's I am going to try this weekend).

We, especially in the West are manipulated to fear death. It is a part of our society. That's why everything in society is so youth-orientated and ageist. We are made to resist the inevitable aging process. Wrinkles and baldness are now a signs of flaws, as opposed to signs of experience and wisdom, hence the plastic surgery boom. This fear of death and the fear of not doing everything we want leads us to become consumers and keep the capitalist system going. (I know - a conspiracy even in a thread like this. Those who've read my posts know what I mean).

I realised the only thing that frightens me about death is leaving my family behind, as someone else said. I feel I should square things with everyone I love, let them know what they mean to me then I can be totally free.

Also, consider these words of wisdom: One thing in life is certain, when you die someone will find your porn stash.

Hehe, I really like that word of wisdom RedEyeJedi.

Yes, once you can strongly believe that something will happen to you when you die, that you are not leaving the existence for all eternity, death doesn't sound terrifying at all. I myself has also read quite a lot of the different research and documentation on this, and hoping for the best. But, I guess I'm one of those that can never believe something enough before I actually see it with my own "eyes"...I wish I could settle with what everyone else tells instead of constantly seeking the truth. But I keep my fingers crossed that I'm not moving towards an end :)
