Keel M. Posted June 3, 2011 #1 Share Posted June 3, 2011 The Italian government has charged seismologists with manslaughter for not predicting earthquakes. Italian government officials have accused the country's top seismologist of manslaughter, after failing to predict a natural disaster that struck Italy in 2009, a massive devastating earthquake that killed 308 people. A shocked spokesman for the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) likened the accusations to a witch hunt. Read more...

ShadowSot Posted June 3, 2011 #9 Share Posted June 3, 2011 What about all the doctors that misdiagnose people? Malpractice lawsuits, loss of license, public ridicule. Sylvia Brown, makes thousands of dollars a day and told a woman her child was dead when the kid was found dead a few days later. Harold Camping, predicts the Rapture which drove some people to attempt suicide, or to sell off all of their belongings and dump their cash, still leads his church group. These are American examples, but Italy has their own assemblage of quacks.
nakajima01 Posted June 3, 2011 #10 Share Posted June 3, 2011 They shouldn't have hired those geologists and seismologists on the first place. Try Harold Camping to calculate the exact date when it will happen, I believe other "psychics" and "prophets" could be the crew. Just make sure you pay H.C. enough Note: What I meant by psychics and prophets here are those fake, no offense to the real ones.
AvalonExists Posted June 3, 2011 #11 Share Posted June 3, 2011 This is the most preposterous thing i have ever heard! where does it end? Will they start charging road workers for car accidents, or doctors for patient deaths or biologists for animal attacks? I hope people make the Italian government see this is absolutely ridiculous. Exactly!! It's somewhat like the wave of political correctness these days, so scared you might say something wrong that either you don't say anything or blurt out the wrong thing!! I think we should be held accountable yes, but not to the extreme, we are only human and meant to make mistakes.

Weird side note...I think I remember reading that there was a pretty big quake somewhere on the same day that Camping predicted his rapture. Can't remember all the details though. minera Posted July 3, 2011 #22 Share Posted July 3, 2011 The whole thing is stupid. But then there are a lot of ignorant supersticious people who probably would have had the scientists burned at the stake if the made a CORRECT prediction, and accusing them of witchcraft. It is shifting the blame from shoddy construction, poor planning and building codes.
libstaK Posted July 3, 2011 #23 Share Posted July 3, 2011 (edited) What a travesty and a joke! The unmittigated arrogance of holding an individual person responsible for their lack of "Psychic" ability - as everything we know about geology tells us that is what it would take to predict an earthquake at this time with the knowledge they have. Although, Italy is showing a significant history on the "witchhunt" front lately - refer Amanda Knox .... It is just plain shameful Edited July 3, 2011 by libstaK
