Tiger tourism decision delayed

Recommended Posts

A ban on tourism in India’s tiger reserves is threatening the livelihoods of local workers, ruining the plans of holidaymakers, and doing nothing to protect the animals, according to a campaign group dedicated to responsible travel.

The ban, which applies to the “core areas” of India’s 41 reserves, came into force in July on the grounds that it would protect the endangered species. It is estimated that there are as few as 3,200 tigers remaining in the wild. New guidelines on tourism have since been proposed by the Indian government, which, if accepted, would see the ban relaxed, but this week the country’s supreme court, for the second time in less than a fortnight, postponed its decision on whether to allow tourists to return.
