pappagooch Posted November 17, 2003 #1 Share Posted November 17, 2003 The finding of a monumental sphinx (approx. 10 tons)in almost intact condition is, in anybody's book, a very big deal indeed. Not so for Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities which treat such find as routine and 'all in a day's work' manner. The sphinx (shown in the photo below) was discovered a few months ago in a deep well (now covered with a grill --see bottom left of photo) next to the pedestal. It was found broken in 6 pieces which, when reasembled, provided the best surviving example of these Ram-headed lions, hundred of which stood in rows in the great processional roads leading from Karnak Temple to Luxor Temple. The small holes around the mouth of the ram' suggests that 'teeth' were once included (probably of bronze) and there is traces of paint on the body, also showing that these sphinxes were once painted with vivid colours. It is out of bound to visitors, although a stroll along the ancient processional way gets you there before being stopped by the SCA inspectors and security guards. Photo by R.
