Can anyone explain to me why we don't drill around known pressure build-up sites around active volcanoes to release pressure and keep them from erupting?  Our scientists are capable of telling us where the places are that need such measures.  We TRAINED them to be able to DO that!

If, in practice and in theory, we can drill for all other manner of reasons, why not to save our Earth and entire populations--like the millions that would die WHEN(not if) the Yellowstone Caldera blows?  Our oil, gold, mineral, water, and gas---mining specialists are TRAINED to be able to DO this--why not put them to work to do something more MEANINGFULL?

If we are short of heroes to send to do it--call Bruce Willis--he'll do it--him AND his crew!

What good is science and technology if we cannot use our knowledge to save our Earth and peoples from destruction?

If it's broke FIX it, if it aint DON'T!

Because the amount of energy needed to destablize a tectonic pressure point is so enormous that only detonating large nuclear bombs would have any effect.

Natural systems embody such enormous amounts of energy that it is difficult to comprehend - no man made systems compare.

I don't believe that is true.
If one drilling would be insufficient--try many!

I don't want to DE-stabilize the plates--I want to STABILIZE them!  Take the problem to the experts--they could a way TO DO it instead of just saying "No."

The Earth needs plate tectonics.

Mother nature is already po'd. I doubt that would satisfy her need to cause destruction that humans can barely withstand.

The only effect would be to release the built up energy which is by definition to destabalize the plates - and no amount of drilling would work beyond causing very minor localized earthquakes.

You cannot stop the plates moving and earthquakes are a consequence of them entering a stuck stable state which suddenly release at unpredictable intervals - the only theoretical benefit would be in staged progressive release of those built up energies to prevent large devastating releases. As said, man cannot muster enough energy to effect these types of systems.

True, especially since most people don't look into the science and tech they're whining about.

Drilling to relieve tectonic stress by creating small earthquakes could have the unintended effect of setting off the BIG ONE.  It's one thing if Mother Nature does it, something else if the government does it.

I think its best to leave it alone.  We humans have already done enough.
