The European Space Agency have announced that they are planning a manned trip to Mars with Russia.

Speaking to reporters at an air show near Moscow on Wednesday, Jean-Jacques Dordain said ESA and Roskosmos (the Russian space agency) would "carry out the first flight to Mars together," according to RIA Novosti.

Just talk and dreams, the sad fact is we have no way to get a person there fast enough. 6 months in space means a person couldnt even stand up once arriving on the planet. Still a fairy tale until we can figure out some really faster rockets.

I'll go! I'm gonna need plenty of pudding cups, a gun (for dangerous alien encounters), some long underwear (its cold there), and a Nintendo 3DS (to keep my sanity). Just tell me were to be ;)

They have workouts and stuff you do to counter that.

The problem is finding people to go. As it stands right now, a trip to mars would be a one way ticket.

And here we are in the USA with a pre-1961 space program

I am glad somebody is talking about going. Our government would rather spend money fighting wars instead of developing space.

THINK, RESEARCH,THEN VOTE

what a waste of resources. I think the cost / benefit ratio is skewed heavy toward cost.

And yet we, all of humanity, continue to multiply and use up natural resources. Add to that we are the eggs that put themselves in one basket just waiting it seems to be wiped out by ourselves or some outside force (nothing like aliens, I am talking war, disease or the stray massive asteroid).

Humans have a drive to explore and expand. The sooner we get off this planet and start to learn how to live off-planet the better future generatons will be.

As an ex-space shuttle worker it is amazing to think of what NASA and other space agencies have brought to all of humanity. That is their biggest failing, poor public relations. JMO.

If by that you include poor marketing/public relations with politicians, I'm on the bandwagon.

Interesting that we weren't invited, or that it's not a more collaborative effort, don't you think? Maybe, with good fortune, we'll start another "space race" and spend our money on something besides acquiring oil and killing people.

Unfortunately it seems that most of mankind is only worried about their own personal freedom and in most 1st world countries that means what they are going to be doing on there next weekend off. Those with children might spend some time worrying about their college funds. The furthest out anyone I have encountered only think about their own retirement. No, most of the folks I have encountered do not think far beyond their own lifetimes hence the lack of support for things that do not give them shiny new toys right away. I do not have children but I imagine in the not too distant future, perhaps several generations from now, they will look back at this time and wonder why we didn't do the things we were capable of to secure their present. I'll long have been worm food by then so I shouldn't care, but I do.

Another thing to keep in mind is the idea of a space race that is not based on one-up-manship but one based on domination of the whole earth. If the first people to colonize the moon or mars are bent in that direction then we are all screwed.

Manned missions to Mars, no country or limited coalition of countries could afford it. Unmanned missions of great sophistication could be engineered for a fraction of the price of sending protoplasm up there. The manned landings on the moon were more about politics than engineering good sense.

Im glad I seen this. im sure that there is without a doubt a lot of milestones to be achieved, but where there is a will, there is always a way ;)

God knows what they have invented so far and they didnt tell... With current technologies we can be on mars in 3 months, only problem for them is how will human body handle it. And dont worry in 100 years will have spaceships of big magnitude. :w00t:

I think the Russians are fairly committed but the ESA has a terrible reputation for dropping projects. Would have been far more exciting if the Russians had teamed up with China. The ESA can't even put a man in orbit let alone put one on Mars.

Russia is more advanced than America, I'm sure if they are planning a manned Mars mission, then they have the wherewithal to do it. Go Russia! Can't wait to see how this goes.

Shouldn't you already know? Since your mind created reality.

The irony of the U.S. sitting out the first manned mission to Mars will probably be lost on the Luddites in congress, but the humiliation of it won't be lost on the rest of the world. Thanks, Wall St. and Tea Partiers!

There again the US by reducing its spending has opened up a massive amount of commercial ventures and some look very promising. Surely more people working on space vehicles and propulsion in competition with each other could be the key to making quicker progress.
