Still Waters Posted January 24, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 24, 2015 In the next few days the authorities in the United States will decide whether to put killer whales on the list of endangered species. If they do, it means some whales being held in captivity could eventually be released into the wild. http://www.bbc.co.uk...onment-30961958
toast Posted January 24, 2015 #2 Share Posted January 24, 2015 Endangered species or not, Orcas/Dolphins should generally not kept in captivity just for fun and just to fulfill commercial interests of a few.
Hawken Posted January 25, 2015 #3 Share Posted January 25, 2015 If they free this one, Maybe release it in warmer waters unlike where the last one died of pneumonia in a fjord in Iceland. Maybe the chances of survival will be higher.
Still Waters Posted February 5, 2015 Author #4 Share Posted February 5, 2015 Latest - Lolita, a captive orca that has spent more than four decades in an aquarium tank, will be granted the same endangered species protection as her wild relatives, US officials said Wednesday.Advocates hope the ruling will lead to her release from the Miami Seaquarium, where she has lived for the past 35 years, but the matter of Lolita's care remains at the center of an impassioned legal dispute. https://uk.news.yaho...77.html#JuzLNgS

This. If we can agree that a species is demonstratably intelligent and we can agree that the animal is demonstratably unhappy in confinement (flopped dorsal fin, etc) than there should be no question. Breeding programs and the like are a different story of course but...it's 2015 and we can no longer use the excuse that "we didn't know better".
