libstaK Posted August 24, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 24, 2014 A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Northern California early Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was the strongest to hit the Bay Area since 1989, when a quake struck during the World Series. Sunday's earthquake struck 4 miles northwest of American Canyon, 6 miles southwest of Napa, and 9 miles southeast of Sonoma, according to the USGS. http://edition.cnn.com/2014/08/24/us/california-earthquake/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

MordorOrc Posted August 25, 2014 #6 Share Posted August 25, 2014 So why haven't any of those buildings been strengthened? After Christchurch, no city in New Zealand was spared the cost of having to assess and demolish buildings according to their earthquake risk they posed to the public. Surely even minor cosmetic damage would be enough to give people a rethink?

Raptor Witness Posted August 25, 2014 #9 Share Posted August 25, 2014 (edited) They would see our technology and be terrified beyond words. They would realize that the Constitution they fathered was not suited to a future they could not envision. They would call for a Constitutional Convention to address our existence as a species, not as a nation. Given that only 6% of California residents are reported to currently have earthquake insurance, what will they do when the "big one" comes? Will they walk away from their mortgages when their foundations are destroyed, making their homes worthless, and unrepairable? Who will compensate the banks? I forecast that these homeowners will flee the state by the millions. It will indeed, be like the Donner Party, in reverse. When did I say that the great quakes would begin in California, which would assist in the removal of the inhabitants of this state? Keel M. Posted August 26, 2014 #10 Share Posted August 26, 2014 (edited) People will no more "walk away" from living in California than many of us did for Hurricane Katrina. Rather absurd to think they would. Edited August 26, 2014 by Child of Bast
