WonderTouched Posted January 12, 2008 #1 Share Posted January 12, 2008 Just a couple days ago, in Florence Mississippi little five year old Briana woke up on a empty school bus The bus was parked in front of school bus drivers home! After young Briana figured out how to open the door on the bus, she wondered down the street up to a house scared and alone. She knocked and luckily was greeted by a nice lady who called the school to inform them that she had young Briana. I was shocked when I heard that the school didn't even know she was missing! Briana Mother was finely contacted after 1:00pm by school and was informed she had been left on the bus, but was ok. Naturally Briana's Mother was upset, yet, the school bus driver was interviewed by local TV station and said on TV parents were making to much of it! Is she saying NO BIG DEAL? I don't know about you but BIG deal is exactly what I would be making of it! In these days where you can't take your child to a park and take your eyes off them afraid, they could become the next missing child picture on a milk carton. This is a 5 year old baby! Dare I say What If! What could have happen to her? How long would it have been before someone would have noticed she was missing from school? How could this bus driver say to her parents they are making to much of it ? Isn't it a duty of the bus driver to check the seats? Come on, these are our children!!! We entrust them to the school system. Is this how they feel? How can we feel confident they will get our children to and from school safely if no action is taken when such negligent occurs. I ask everyone to leave their feelings on this here on UM. I feel Briana's School in Florence Mississippi Family services or District Attorney should take action! Do you think something more should be done about this, besides saying No BIG DEAL! This is not just a story to me its family and the second child in our family something has happening to while on a school bus This is my great -niece. InHuman Posted January 12, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 12, 2008 Yeah thats messed up. The bus driver should take responsibility for his mess up. While kids were in his care. And the school didn't know? WTF, if your even 20 minutes late my french teacher phone home and to your parents at work.
Lilix_Vixen Posted January 12, 2008 #3 Share Posted January 12, 2008 I can't believe that!! That bus driver should have been fired on the spot!!! No big deal, my butt!! Then what would have been a big deal??? If she was found killed or abducted by a pedophile?!?! They should make a petition against that bus driver to have him/her fired. Because if this is no big deal to the bus driver then it will probably be happening again. Hey why not its no big deal!! I bet you if it were the bus drivers check that were missing instead of a child......Then it would be a big deal. She'd be tearing that bus up looking for it. goalienan Posted January 12, 2008 #5 Share Posted January 12, 2008 The problem is that this was a neglectful bus driver, who didn't check the bus upon getting off....Very similar to a little girl recently in my town who couldn't remember where her bus stop was....The driver was a fill in, and a high school student was with her, showing the stops....It was pouring rain, and this ignorant driver told the girl to get off the bus...The high school student, rode one more block, told the bus driver to let him out and went back to the little girl....Frightened is an understatement....The little one was nowhere near her house, the teenager had enough sense to call the school and his mom...The school finally got in touch with the little one's mother who met them and took her home....So the problem could have been, that this teenager was as stupid as the driver (which he wasn't), and someone could have come along, taken the little girl, and noone would have been the wiser....We're supposed to have responsible adults entrusted to our kids, but it doesn't work that way....This was one more case of a negligent, uncaring adult and she did get fired...... Lilix_Vixen Posted January 12, 2008 #6 Share Posted January 12, 2008 MISTAKES CAN HAPPEN, no one is infallible. She made it back alive where is the problem? Are you serious??? I agree with you that mistakes happen, but this was not a mistake is was pure and simple negligences on his part. When you are responsible for human life you can not be that careless. First of all, this little child was wandering around lost, alone, and scared and it was a miracle that she knocked on a decent human beings door and not a pedophiles door or worse. Second of all, she is totally dependent on the adult that is suppose to be watching over her. And this bus driver should know that and be more vigilant in his responsibility. I mean how would you feel if this were someone you loved??

The Skeptic Eric Raven Posted January 12, 2008 #8 Share Posted January 12, 2008 (edited) Are you saying where you live you are plagued with pedophiles? and murderers? think about moving if i were you Sex offenders are everywhere. No getting away from them. Pull off the data base map and more than likely you will have several within miles of you. I live in a very nice area. There are 4 within 3 miles of my home. It could've also been a crime of opportunity...someone that had only been toying with the idea suddenly has a little girl lost and knocking at their door, no one knowing where she is. Purplos Posted January 13, 2008 #13 Share Posted January 13, 2008 Even if everyone in the neighborhood was a cookie-baking granny with a heart of gold, it doesn't excuse the bus driver. What is a bus driver's job? To drive the bus safely and within legal limits. To pick up each child from the designated spot and to deliver them safely to that spot again after school. From the time a child steps onto the bus until they step off the bus, they are the school's - and the bus company's - responsibility. The woman didn't do her job. She should be fired, at the very least.

gigs Posted January 13, 2008 #15 Share Posted January 13, 2008 (edited) This was my worst fear among others when out daughter rode the bus for 1 year at the same age as this poor little girl. Glad this story had a happy ending, to think of the things that could have happened... My Dad drove for Grey Hound and I remember he had to check the seats for people and items left behind , etc.. Common sense ! Dealing with the public and putting this kids life in jeopardy, YES more needs to be one ! I understand it was unintentional, but at least never be allowed to drive a Bus again something ! Take responsibility say sorry and not the parents are making a big deal out of it . That is BS ! I would be crazy nuts and you want to see a BIG DEAL ..... Wow . Edited January 13, 2008 by gigs
MeanBaby_Jean Posted January 13, 2008 #16 Share Posted January 13, 2008 MISTAKES CAN HAPPEN, no one is infallible. She made it back alive where is the problem? I would like to thank the woman that answered the door that day when my Great Grandaughter knocked at her door to ask for help. If she haden't knocked at the right door we may not be looking at her beautiful face today. Children are precious. That is why schools hire drivers to make sure our children get to school and back home safely. She obivous that she didn't do her job. I just wonder if she has children, or brothers or sisters, nieces or nephews. Does she care about them? We as a society should care for all the children, yours, your neighbors, and each and every child. I pray that the school district takes some action to insure that this dosen't happen to any other child. The answer I have for you is that it should not have hapened and answers like yours shows that you don't see the problem. That is the problem. You and others like you with your same attitude. MissMelsWell Posted January 13, 2008 #17 Share Posted January 13, 2008 It's good she was ok. However, bus drivers are suppose to walk through and check the bus for kids who may have fallen asleep, the bus driver at the very least needs to be suspended or fired. My daughter, when she was about 6 maybe 7 rode the state Ferry system alone on occasion. She'd go to visit a friend on an island, her friends parents would put her on the ferry and I'd pick her up on the other side. One day, she didn't disembark the ferry. I KNEW her friends parents had loaded her on the boat. The boat unloaded all the car, loaded the new set of cars and right before I started to panic, a boat worker came walking down the loading ramp with one VERY asleep 6 year old in his arms. Cracked me up. But the point is, even state Ferry workers who have hundreds of riders every crossing sweep the boat for passengers who may have missed the landing--it happens a lot because people do tend to fall asleep. Yes, this bus driver should probably lose their job. I probably would NOT blame the school. They probably just thought she was absent, out with a cold, and hadn't had a chance to follow up yet. They probably just thought she was absent, out with a cold, and hadn't had a chance to follow up yet. That's what I was thinking. You can blame the bus driver. But how was the school supposed to have known she wasn't just sick at home? A certain amount of kids are gonna be absent on any given day. Some parents don't inform the school straight away (or at all even). Do schools really follow up on every student that hasn't shown up the minute after school starts? I know the schools that I went to didn't. Edited January 13, 2008 by Ins0mniac
