rohnds Posted August 15, 2006 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2006 (edited) How many members here have aquariums in their homes? I used to keep 4 freshwater tanks (20Long, 29, 55 and 65) and one saltwater tank (55). Since we moved to our new house, I converted my 65 into a saltwater tank. This is the main display tank in the living room; and the only tank I have. I sold the rest except for my 20Long and 10 that I using as Q tanks. What about everyone else? LizFL Posted August 15, 2006 #2 Share Posted August 15, 2006 I loved my saltwater tank!! I had to leave the whole setup (yepp, including fish) with my mom when we moved overseas though. I miss it so much!! We had just as much fun watching the inverts as the fish!! thank goodness my mom also has a true appreciation for the beauty of a marine habitiat. I miss it so much! rassy Posted August 15, 2006 #3 Share Posted August 15, 2006 So far I have 3 fish tanks and some fish bowls. It's a new hobby for me, only started it 4 months ago. I have a 25g for tropical fish, 20g for non-tropical fish which I am hoping to make a bigger tank for. I made another tank that's oval and not sure how many gallons it is, but easily 10g fit, I just have a betta and a corycat in there. In the bowls I have a few bettas and female bettas. I'm planning on expanding because I'd like to have some freshwater sharks. When I understand alot more, I'm planning on trying saltwater. I haven't lost any fish so far
Saint Posted August 17, 2006 #4 Share Posted August 17, 2006 I keep guppies and tetras plus some algae eaters and I really enjoy my tank! Very restful, I find...
Purplos Posted August 17, 2006 #5 Share Posted August 17, 2006 I don't like saltwater tanks... too colorful. I have 3 freshwater right now: 55 gal, 40 gal corner tank, and a 30 gallon in my son's room. Vast assortment of cory, tetras, rasboras, hatchetfish, couple of plecos.... I wish I had room for more. Guest Lottie Posted August 21, 2006 #9 Share Posted August 21, 2006 (edited) Over here in the UK **** is a profanity, so it is on the censored word list. As I see it is also part of a name for a tank.. unfortunately this is the reason why your name has been censored. Purplos Posted August 21, 2006 #10 Share Posted August 21, 2006 Over here in the US it is as well actually. Hey frogfish - is keeping cichlids more difficult than non-cichilid freshwaters? Just got a few more fish yesterday - some zebra danios - love them schooling around so fast.
samanthauk23 Posted August 22, 2006 #11 Share Posted August 22, 2006 We've just set up a sal****er tank.... we have two fish in there so far and some live rocks (which were blimmin expensive considering they're just rocks) Out of nowhere, two little starfish has popped up....where did they come from!?!?! Can't have been the rocks can it? It was a long car journey to get them home (in a plastic bag, no water), how would the starfish have survived it?? It was a long car journey to get them home (in a plastic bag, no water), how would the starfish have survived it?? Those are goose starfish...Kind of a pest...Yes, they came in your rocks...They can survive the trip w/o water as they are still moist. They came in my live rock also.... got rid of them as they started messing with my corals. Hey frogfish - is keeping cichlids more difficult than non-cichilid freshwaters A little...As they are much more aggressive....You have to watch what species you put in your tank...Lol, I have jack Dempseys and Oscars. Those are like the heavyweights of the cichlid world.
samanthauk23 Posted August 29, 2006 #13 Share Posted August 29, 2006 Whoot! Thanks frogfish! I'll get rid of them then! They've since split and we nw have FIVE in there. Weird!

Uhhhh, I doubt it. My stars used to disappear sometimes. They are just hiding in the rocks or stuff. What kind of an Angelfish?

frogfish Posted August 30, 2006 #18 Share Posted August 30, 2006 Oh ha...Long-finned bannerfish are actually butterfly fishes, not angelfish. They are totally vegetarian. Oh, and Gill was a Moorish Idol. I have one of those beauties in my tank. Damn expensive fish. It's surprising how many look-alikes the Moorish Idol has. The Bannerfish is known as the poor man's moorish idol
snuffypuffer Posted August 30, 2006 #19 Share Posted August 30, 2006 I had several freshwater tanks when I was younger. Bettas, catfish, those little shark guys. I haven't had one in a while, though. I want to try out a sal****er tank but I'm afraid I'd kill them all.
frogfish Posted August 30, 2006 #20 Share Posted August 30, 2006 I want to try out a sal****er tank but I'm afraid I'd kill them all. Don't be afraid...If you have a tight budget, start out with a tank with some live rock and Damselfish...They cost about 3-4 dollars (USD). These little fish are pretty and hardy. Once you got the hang of it, you can work your way up. NOTE: Corals are hard to keep, they need specialized equipment and treatement. Start out with just inverts and fish...After some time (maybe a year or two, corals would be good). Also, try not to keep more of one than the blue and striped damsels, as they are aggressive towards their own kind. Green Chromis are fine schooling fish. They are really pretty in schools. That's why I have 7. Damselfish The guys at the local fish store (esp. salt-water) will be MORE THAN GLAD to help you. They will walk you step by step to how to set it up, and maintenance. They probably even do free water quality checks. It definitely worth it.
samanthauk23 Posted August 30, 2006 #21 Share Posted August 30, 2006 One of my green chromis died just before I went to bed last night! :'( It hadn't been eating since the bannerfish went in, and had been hiding behind a rocok pretty much the whole time since. Last night it sunk to the bottom on it's side, spasmed out and then died. I'm sad....

SwampGator Posted September 4, 2006 #25 Share Posted September 4, 2006 I have one fish and one aquarium. I bought my orange oscar 7 years ago and the more he grew the bigger aquarium I got for him because I didn't want to stunt his growth. "Willy" resides in a 65 gallon now and he eats 12 feeder goldfish a day. I used to seine minnows from the river for him but don't have the time any more. So far I have put crappie, catfish and black bass in with him and he killed them all by ramming their gills.
