Lethal Virus Sample Vanishes From U.S. Biodefense Lab

March 26, 2013

By Diane Barnes
Global Security Newswire
WASHINGTON -- A high-security biodefense laboratory in Texas has lost track of a lethal hemorrhagic fever virus sample in an incident said to underscore recent government warnings about how the United States oversees the deadly disease agents it holds for study.

In Texas, no doubt!!

I heard about this yesterday. Check out: http://hisz.rsoe.hu/...tmap/index2.php
I also heard about it on infowars.com
Needless to say, because I live in Texas, this has me a little unnerved at the moment.

Well, it means, IMHO, that Texas is too casual about their disposal of lethal microbes. I remember when a U. of Texas lab lost anthrax (?) vials, ... during the despised' Bush Oval Office years. It also means to me that we may well see some form of this virus travel the world now. like when they dug up the women who died of the specific flu epidemic (swine, bird, something, Dr. Pat Doyle would know, for i am too lazy to look it all up right now) somewhere around 1918 because they said we had no sample of that virus, only to see it emerge in the world's population some time later, ... again during the despised' Bush Oval Office years.

As to what it really means, ... time will tell.

Well, after reading the article, it doesn't seem like it's specifically one state that has lax rules.

Quote

The House Energy and Commerce Committee has begun to scrutinize possible security threats at the nation's biodefense laboratories. The Agriculture Department last year noted failures by its inspectors to identify unauthorized transfers of anthrax and plague samples, and congressional investigators this week released findings that the Obama administration had yet to follow through on their 2009 recommendation to establish a uniform code for planning, constructing and overseeing sensitive biological defense facilities.
Even though the Galveston laboratory incident has generally been attributed to a benign cause, microbiologist John Palisano warned there is "no reason to be cavalier and say we don’t have anything to worry about."
"Sometime, someone’s going to see a lapse in security and then take advantage of it," Palisano, an infectious disease specialist at the University of the South, said in a telephone interview. He called for more frequent federal inspections aimed at ensuring compliance with existing rules.

In the case of such horrible viral diseases that are being stored by the government, don't you think they should have top notch security in place to prevent theft?

But this has happened during the Obama years.

One would think so, yes.
But that doesn't seem to be the reality.
In my own state, they are wanting to place a government biolab. Already the issue is fraught with dishonest contracts, old-boy network antics and so on. No, I don't think the proposed lab they want to build here will be safe, placed deep in the heart of the nation's breadbasket.

Also this lab is supposed to be placed near an Al Qaeda camp that we are not officially supposed to know about. But the OK city bombing certainly brought it to light.

This has happened in other places too.  I think any lab in possession of these things need to know where they are.  All we need is one of these things to get out and start killing people.

Live samples of a deadly flu virus were recently sent out accidentally to over 5,000 laboratories. Most labs were in the U.S., 14 others were in Canada and 61 were scattered among 16 other countries. As of April 15, almost a week after the laboratories were instructed to destroy the thousands of vials, about a third of them were still unaccounted for.

I seem to remember one in Corning Haselton (east coast, corporate lab), ebola.

Some of these viruses have been weaponized.  Let a terrorist get their hands on one of these and millions could die.

It doesn't even have to be done by terrorists. There are national factions that would do it, just like armed nukes flew from one end of this country to another, dubiously passing all inspections but the last one, with no mainstream media asking just where those missles were headed. Since terrorism is such a vague term these days, factions of the US military and the US government could fall within that category.

I agree. I now try to look at the issue rather than which side I can blame because that limits solutions when I have to view something as a party platform does. They both have problems is all I can say, IMHO

I agree it doesn't have to be a terrorist, it could be any nut out there from any country in the world.

Scary. As a related-note, I'm more concerned about bioterrorism than nuclear.
