Under the slogan ‘Tough But Intelligent’, the Prime Minister will signal a tougher approach to law and order by declaring “retribution is not a dirty word”. It is nothing more than for them to find another way to either save money or make even more money or both... Save money from not paying the companies that run the prison when the people released re-offend, make money by fining the same company when the same people released re-offend, it is a win win for the government If the government really want's to show that they are "tough on crime" then stop treating the criminal's like kid's, letting them have various luxuries in prison like satelite television, Xbox's PS3's etc etc etc and actually make those criminal's NOT to want to be in prison, unlike now where they often see it as "no skin off their nose" if they end up inside Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
+and-then Posted October 21, 2012 #4 Share Posted October 21, 2012 In my home State of Alabama prisons are pretty "cushy" now as well - at least they are compared to how they used to be. But inmates still are required to work. Not so long ago if the inmates wanted food they had to grow it themselves. Temps in summer can hover around 35 - 40 with very high humidity so "gardening" can be a bit stressful. Discipline and recidivism weren't as much of a problem. Prison law states prisoners must spend a certain amount of time out of there cells a day .also we want these prisoners to go to work or be rehabilitated . The problem is resources in a high security prison the safe working ratio is around 30 prisoners to 1 member of staff . In category B prison it's around 70 , in a private prison it's around 150 to 1 . Now bear in mind these staff are not allowed to use CS gas ( this is all prisons) are not allowed to wear anti stab vests (it intimidates the prisoners apparently) there are no gun towers like in the USA and officers in private prisons can't even use a baton to defend themselves . So what happens is one person has to go around a prison wing with nothing but a shirt for protection unlock sometimes over 100 prisoners on there own stand in among them ,tell them what to do , discipline them and maintain order with little to no backup ! The assault rate on prison staff equals 8 assaults per year per member of staff and staff continue to be cut. In the end unless we appease the prisoners with nice stuff we will need to at least double staff or pay billions to rebuild prisons when they are smashed to prices by prisoners that can't get there own way .
