The front cover of renowned publication Time Magazine depicts a young man in a "hoodie" with mugshots of others across a Union Jack. Its headline reads: "Unhappy, Unloved and Out of Control - An epidemic of violence, crime and drunkenness has made Britain scared of its young." It also pours scorn upon the parenting abilities of the British, claiming they do not spend enough time with their children and cannot cope. The magazine criticises our class-riven society, education system and binge-drinking culture. Scroll down for more... The front cover of Time magazine shows a glowering hoody superimposed on a Union Jack for its feature on Britain's youth The weekly magazine, which goes on sale across the world today, cites a survey by the children's charity TS Rebel which found last year that more than a fifth of Britons avoided going out at night rather than risk encountering groups of intimidating youths. A 3,200 word article states: "It's easy to see why. "The boys and girls who casually pick fights, have sex and keep the emergency services fully occupied are often fuelled by cheap booze." It says that British youngsters drink far more than their European counterparts, are more frequently involved in violence and are more likely to try drugs, adding that English girls are the most sexually active in Europe. "Small wonder then, that a 2007 Unicef study of child well-being in 21 industrialised countries placed Britain firmly at the bottom of the table," the article states. The magazine, which has a circulation of four million, has put the story on its international front cover. It will also feature the article in its US editions, providing further embarrassment to the Government. Time also says that Labour's ambitious target of halving child poverty by 2010, set by Tony Blair, is unlikely to be achieved. It states: "The British have a long propensity to recoil in horror from their children - whether they be Teddy boys in the 1950s, mods and rockers in the Sixties, skinheads in the Seventies or just a bunch of boisterous teens making a lot of noise but little real mischief. "But it is also true that for what Bob Reitemeier, chief executive of the Children's Society, call a 'significant minority' of British children, unhappiness - and the criminality, excessive drinking and drug-taking and promiscuity that is its expression - really have created a crisis. "All over the world, teenagers give their parents headaches. "Why are the migraines induced by British kids felt across a whole society? "Part of the reason may be that parents aren't always around to help socialise their children - or even just to show them affection. "Compared to other cultures, British kids are less integrated into the adult world and spend more time with their peers. "Add to the mix a class structure and an education system that rewards the advantaged, and some children are bound to be left in the cold." The article expresses particular concern at Britain's binge-drinking culture. MUM24/7 Posted March 28, 2008 #3 Share Posted March 28, 2008 Just this morning I read about a couple of British teenagers who kicked and bashed a young man and his girlfriend.....The man survived but the young woman died....Apparently, the couple were targeted because they wore gothic-style clothing..... Absolutely horrifying......What's worse was the killers' parents' attitude in court, apparently they didn't even seem to care what their sons had done..... No wonder these teenagers are screwed..... That said, yes there are real problems with the UK Society, too many scroungers having children to boost their benefit handouts, too many drugs because the govt wont impose zero tolerance, the legal drinking age is too low. That said, the same is true in ALL developed nations. Too many immigrant getting their own way, with the attitude "act bad and get what you want", no prospects for social housing because they are being reserved for economic migrants, an industrial base depleted by moving REAL jobs to the Euro-East. The answer? who knows, but I would start with NO benefit increase if you get pregnant to boost your income, raise drinking age to 21, immediately remove the alcohol license from any shop selling to underage, remove children from homes with a record of drug and alcohol abuse, repatriate economic migrants to release well-paid jobs to Nationals, Sack all politicians from Labour, Tory, and Liberal parties... make party Whips illegal, and bring true representation back to the people. And that justifies all goths being scum? The 'goth' girl who spat at your sister was in the wrong, not goths as a society. In fact, this is one of the main problems in our country. Judging those because they don't wear what you do. Or hating those that don't meet your expectations. Just because you've had a bad experience with a few people doesn't mean you should brand all those who look alike with the same label. There are a******s in every group. You just had the unfortunate chance to meet them. As for the OP, I don't think the magazine is exaggerating at all. I think it's a pretty accurate portrayal of youths in Britain. Which is a shame because I'm 21 and I don't act like that, and never did in my teenage years. I know people who are 5 years younger than me and those 5 years older that cause trouble for whoever they come across. I do believe there is an epidemic. This country is in such a state that a lot of British are ashamed of their heritage. And the procrastination of the government and society to do anything about their problems means the worse it gets, the harder it's going to be to fix. When we have adults grooming kids as young as 11-12 for prostitution.racial gang warfare,peadophiles, rapists and murderers walking our streets,the kids are going to join gangs for protection.There is no hope for them really. That said, yes there are real problems with the UK Society, too many scroungers having children to boost their benefit handouts, too many drugs because the govt wont impose zero tolerance, the legal drinking age is too low. IMO Raising the drinking age wont do a thing, drugs are illegal an so easy to buy so getting booze is a walk in the park, british youths are living in the make believe world of the gansta, bling, respect, bull. its gonna get worse an worse, an what are your govt gonna do about it, absoutley nothing, because they have no idea where you are from, nearest they get to a council estate is if they drive by it. I believe you are correct. The working class of the industrialized nations have been in an economic crisis for a long time now and this is all a result of it. The upper class oligarchies have miserably failed their nations in their most basic responsibility in return for their supported and protected wealth and power. They have conducted themselves as if their own homeland and their own people were nothing more than a colony from the past to be used, abused, and exploited. That's not entirely accurate. Gothic culture comes from all walks of life, as does every other culture. I think your generalisation of where people come from is extremely jaded by the fact that you base ALL forms of society on the small pigeon hole of those you meet. In my area we have 28 year old chavs. No goths or grebs above 25 here though. My view? Shove the hoodies, chavs ect into concentration camps and 'forget' where we put them. I have to agree -- I lived in the UK for most of my 20s (and a substantial part of my youth before), and never thought it to be so riddled with vicious youth. Certainly not more so than the US! I know plenty of goths that are lower, working class. It's so small minded and judgmental to suggest everyone who 'wears black' comes from a certain type of family.
