Still Waters Posted May 20, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 20, 2011 Historians from the University of Glasgow have found evidence to show that, as far as the English were concerned, Scots patriot and hero William Wallace aspired to be King of Scotland.A newly discovered English source, which also marks the earliest record of Wallace’s gruesome execution, confirms outright what historians had only suspected before: the reason that Edward I dealt so harshly with Wallace was that he viewed him as a pretender to the Scottish crown. Flagellum Dei Posted May 27, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 27, 2011 He is always portrayed as a 'Scottish Patriot' , but Nationalism is a surprisingly modern idea. I wouldn't be surprised if he did intend to make a claim for the throne, considering it had been vacant since 1286, and nobody else was strong enough (Or politically connected enough) to take it.
