Space travel can accelerate Alzheimer's: US study

Long journeys into deep space, including a mission to Mars, could expose astronauts to levels of cosmic radiation harmful to the brain and accelerate Alzheimer's disease, said US research Monday.

The NASA-funded study involved bombarding mice with varied radiation doses, including levels comparable to what voyagers would experience during a mission to Mars, and seeing how the animals managed to recall objects or locations.

Oh dear, this isn't very good news. Perhaps looking into this will aid in finding a solution to the problem of Alzheimer's for everyone.

Well mice aren't exactly going to get the same affect as humans, but lets ignore that.

Can't these results help with reversing then? Or at least prevention? Has to be a positive from this.

Humans belong to Earth .

Yeah right, and we aren't supposed to fly, travel at 70 mph or cross the oceans either.

Fortunately for mankind the courageous have always won out over the naysayers, otherwise we would still be living in caves and hunting with sharpened sticks.

But everything you mentioned happens on Earth . Advancement is essential but you must point in the right direction . Peace on Earth will never be attained by poking Sirius with a sharp stick .

What a lot of nonsense. Your argument is a non sequitur.

Peace on Earth can only be achieved by a change in human attitudes. Whether we explore space or not is irrelevant. The one is not linked to the other so your argument is devoid of logic.

Motor vehicles haven't bought peace on Earth, aircraft haven't brought peace on Earth and ships haven't brought peace on Earth but to say we shouldn't have invented these things because they haven't brought peace would be a ridiculous argument, yet it is the very same ridiculous argument you use against space exploration.

Like I said, the naysayers are usually ignored, and for a good reason.

As the article says, the Earth's magnetic field protects us from a good deal of space radiation. The Earth's magnetic field is very large, but also very weak. I wonder if we could substitute a small, strong field, which is easy to produce, around a space ship and get the same, or better, shielding effects as the large weak one.

As I have said before, space travel poses it's risks!Muscular dystrophy is noted in long term space flights.Apart from the newly found medically ruled, Alzheimers .Many astronauts say that the experience leaves them floored. They need time to recover. They have to readjust to the Earth's normal gravity. We are protected in a safe cocoon. This Earth has served as a protected place for mankind for all these years since Genesis. Even Earth's magnetic field has served as a protective field against radiation etc.We all have to accept mankind's needs to know it's boundaries. We are all only human,& the world as we know it is supported by a universal being known as God Yahweh that created this perfect environment for us . We are not,as we thought, more superior enough to know better.Accept it & accept that we,as humans must remain here until we wake up to the fact that God,in his supreme knowledge knows better than us.

I can see the American commercials right now:

"Feeling blue? Feeling heavy? Feel like the world has become to big to bear? "

Try Space Travel!

-may induce trombosis, infertility, muscular atrophy, psychosis, alzheimer and possible early death-
