The Light Switch

Rock-Star

Recommended Posts

Throughout the years I have had a recurring dream regarding a light switch. In this dream, which has always been very vivid, I walk up to a light switch and flick it on, and the light connected to said switch does not turn on. Repeatedly turning the switch on and off does nothing. To take it a layer deeper, the dreams always have centered on the same switch...when I was living at my parents, the switch was the primary one in my bedroom, and when I was living in a condo with my family, it was always the switch in the hallway outside the kitchen. These dreams were incredibly vivid to the point that I had a hard time distinguishing them from reality, and often expected the switch not to work when flipping it in waking life. Interestingly enough, since moving to our new home this past May, I have not had this dream in any form. Anyone else have a similar experience, or a clue as to the interpretation? Thanks!

Yeah, I experienced the light switch not turn on too. Not sure why this happens to many people. Probably in spiritual realm, there is no electrical device or there is but there is no electric.

Assuming it's not a form of astral as alluded to by FlyingAngel...

...the mundane interpretation of light switches is to see something; meaning looking at something in a new light, or revealing things unknown or confused to you before. Something along those lines. When we turn lights on in our dreams it is much for the same reason we do in waking life, except it tends to apply to the rest of the symbols in the dream. If there wasn't much to the dream and the light didn't come on, then I'd say it reflected a general state of confusion or doubt that was troubling you during those times. To be reiterated is usually the subconscious' way of trying to 'get the message home' about the thing(s) we recurrently dream of. Without additional symbols it's hard to say what it was you weren't seeing (or more to the point, what was troubling you that you needed to see but were not seeing). You'd have to think back to the circumstances around those dreams, in your waking life, to see what this angle approaches. Not that you need to if you're no longer having them.

Also note that you might have this theme any time you are not seeing things that are bothering you, as the subconscious will use what it has experienced in order to make sense of things; especially whenever there is emotion attached (subconscious feels and envisions, conscious rationalizes and perceives). Of course, if those particular lights or the rooms/walls/things immediately around them or experiences attached to them mean anything more to you, then that could also add insight as well...the key would be emotional content or meaning of personal nature. (which I don't foresee in a light switch, but who knows?)

Thanks for taking the time both of you! Sevastiel, you may have hit upon something interesting when you said that it could have been something troubling me. At both places where I experienced this dream regularly, my parents' house and then our condominium, I was dealing with some stressful situations and feelings in my life. At our new home I have been much more at peace and feel that I have "found my place" if you will, in this life. Maybe then it is no coincidence that the dream has stopped!

The light switch dream Is a common form of false awakening, but to rule this out, if you don't normally turn that particular switch on for light should you wake up, then it may not be a false awakening.

In most cases the persons hand passes through the light switch. Maby even the wall.

Haha I used to get a dream like that all the time except I would be at home and all the lights were on but everytime I left a room the light would turn off so everytime the light went out I would try and flip the switch but it would be burned out. It would keep happening tell I was in the last room of the house that had light in it. Then at the end the room I was in the light would just go out and I would wake up screaming my little butt off cause even though it wasnt really scary I alwas felt that there was something there in the dark.
