New ipod shuffle messing up. Help.

Ok, so short and sweet.

I got a new Ipod shuffle from best buy by mail order. It is silver, pretty and smooth looking. It was working fine, but a few days ago, I turned it off unplugged my headphones from it, plugged in my headphones into the computer for a online assignment that had audio, and then plugged my headphones back into the ipod and turned it on.....but it didn't work. Nothing I did turned it on. I waited for at least 5 minutes and then it worked again. My older ipod shuffle did this too. My question is, is this normal? what causes this? And are there any other useful things I should know?
