More than 30 hikers are believed to have died near the peak of an erupting volcano in Japan.

Police said they were found unconscious and in cardiac arrest near the summit of the 3,067 metre (10,121ft) Mount Ontake, which erupted on Saturday, spewing large white plumes of gas and ash high into the sky and blanketing the surrounding area in ash.

Does it often spew gases into the atmosphere like that?

Because if it doesn't, I think there's going to be a bigger bang soon.

I believe it last erupted in 2007 - that's a little too regular imo, but it could just as easily fizzle as go the other way.

They're worried it might erupt again.

Renewed seismic activity, bad weather and dangerous levels of toxic gases near the peak of Mount Ontake combined on Tuesday to halt efforts to recover the dead from the Japanese volcano, three days after it erupted without warning.
