RAF Typhoon fighter jets were scrambled after two Russian military aircraft were seen flying towards UK airspace, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.

The British jets were launched from RAF Lossiemouth after the Russian planes were spotted north of Scotland.

An MoD spokesman said: "At no time did the Russian military aircraft cross into UK sovereign airspace."

Earlier this week, which the BBC failed to make it a big story as this one, was that a Russian spy plane was flying around in the Baltic sea and Russian ships going through the channel

Should see what's happening every day over the Baltics. the NATO Air policing mission is intercepting Russian aircraft and vice versa. NATO made an official complaint to the Russian Federation over a number of incidents. one which caught the headline in the "pleb" media was the USAF Rivet Joint being intercepted in early April.

They do this very often in this neck of the woods. Our airforce are doing intercepts of Russian planes on a regular basis, especially around the island of Bornholm. http://www.thelocal....tack-on-denmark

Recently they even went so far as to threaten us with nuclear attack if we updated our frigates (http://en.wikipedia....t-class_frigate) to include ballistic missile capability. http://www.thelocal....-nuclear-attack

Its allways nice when your neighbors are mentally unstable.

Russia hasn't violated NATO airspace. they have remained in International air space. But at least these provocations by Russia will make the UK and NATO members think twice about Defence cuts.

In the News.

NATO troops are parading and actively showing their presence around Russia's borders so I would say these 'provocations' have been back and forth between Western powers and the Russia since the Ukrainian conflict.

Mapped: Just how many incursions into Nato airspace has Russian military made?

http://www.telegraph...itary-made.html

If only they mapped NORAD airspace. a friend of mine in the Air Force said its almost a weekly thing or was when he was.

The difference is that NATO nations are on Russian Borders. But Russia has been flying bombers near NATO air space for a decade. (Modern Russia not the USSR)

Perhaps. But Russian sorties near NATO air space were not as frequent as they are these days, just like NATO's activites around Russia's borders were no near as showy in these last ten years. I would say it's all linked to the conflict in Ukraine, which clearly has hightenen tensions between Russia and the West.

They are also in response to the massive and numerous Russian Military Exercises next to NATO nations and the Ukraine.

they have been doing this for a number of years now, like nearly 10 years or less

A few of the sorties are probably 'tests' of new radar and countermeasures technologies, both theirs and NATO's. They want to see how far they can get before detection/interception. So, apart from the mind-games there is a tactical reason for such sorties. I imagine NATO does much the same, also.
