Quote

NEW YORK (PIX11)—
Forty-Seven year old Deborah Stevens is a sweet mother of two who thought she was doing something humane and simply out of the kindness of her heart which, in turn, seemed to backfire, big time.

Stevens was an employee at the Atlantic Automotive Group from over a year before she decided to move to Florida. She left on good terms and during a trip back to NY, she visited her former employer to say hello.

While she was there, her boss, Jacqueline Brucia explained how she was having health problems and needed a new kidney. Debbie told Brucia if she ever needed a kidney, she would be willing to donate.

After deciding to move back to New York, Debbie asked for her old job back. Brucia immediately hired her back, and then reminded her that she offered a kidney at one time.

"My boss needed a kidney," said Stevens.

Stevens went under the knife in August of 2011 to have her left kidney removed. The recovery was nothing like she expected and she went through a painful recovery.

On September 6th, Stevens went back to work, even though she was still in pain. That is when she realized what really went down.

"It appeared I was used. She used her power and she manipulated me," said Stevens.

The boss who once asked for the gift of life -- turned into an ungrateful monster, finding fault in everything Stevens did.

That is pretty bad. I feel very sorry for her.

But, looking at this from a corporate perspective, what was supposed to happen? This nice lady is supposed to get special treatment due to her giving away a kidney? Sometimes to prevent the image of favoritism... parents, siblings, relatives, friends... will be especially hard on an employee, to show there is no favoritism. The lady was fired after she was moved. Could it be that she was not fired earlier due to her Boss protecting her? And then when she moved her incompetance got her fired immediately. She moved over and over apparently. Maybe trying to outrun a bad employment history?

Was the boss supposed to gush over her every day and take her to lunch every day?

Nice to see your True Colors showing. Hope you never get sick or need an organ transplant.

Because apparently there are other more warm hearted people deserving people than you do.

So, if you gave away an organ, would you expect Special Treatment?

If it was your boss, or your bosses boss, would you expect better raises and promotions, and being taken out to lunch and such?

Who said anything about raises or promotion. She could at least appreciated the fact that this woman did the right thing and gave her one of her kidney to save her life but instead now feels like she was just used and then tossed like yesterdays trash.

The woman who was fired will soon get her day. Karma will one day bite her boss back in the rear for her ungratefulness.

It was a crummy thing for Brucia to do.  However, I feel like we don't know the whole story.  Many people who perform poorly at his or her job wouldn't readily admit to that.  We don't know with 100% certainty whether there was poor performance on the job by Stevens or whether her performance was excellent.  If you give your boss your kidney and then perform poorly at work, does that mean that the boss should overlook flaws as a reward for the kidney?  I'm not saying this is the case here, but I truly don't think the court of public opinion could make an informed decision.  Stevens sounds bitter, and rightfully so.  What she says may be entirely true, or it could be that she truly thought this donation would give her job security forever.  We can't know that, therefore we should maybe reserve judgment on Brucia and Atlantic Automotive Group.

They informed her they had heard from other employees that Brucia was harassing Stevens.

Did you miss that part? The part where human resources told this woman that other employees had complained on her behalf as well??? Where on EARTH do you get that she was asking for preferential treatment? Brucia was also quite wrong in reminding Stevens of her original offer, as if it were a condition of re-employment. Rather tasteless if you ask me.

It sounds (from the information available) that this poor lady was simply used by her boss in order to obtain a kidney. If this is indeed the case I hope the court will heavily fine the boss.

Another man might say "An even bigger fool and his/her kidney are soon parted"...

... Why just a few days a go a boy in China sold his kidney for an Ipad 2..

I'd want the kidney back... Enough DNA proof to show who the owner is I would think.

Fire the boss. Infact, fire anyone that puts corporate interests before a great deed of compassion.

Try to do something good for someone and they kick you for it.  You learn the hard way to always put yourself first when you are dealing with someone with no compassion.   People like that are always the first to take advantage of you.

This is all over the news here.Every station .
She wasn't recupperating quickly, that's why she was not in top form.
Given she gave one of her kidneys to the boss, and this is why she wasn't well in the first place, yeah, she should have been given special consideration .
The woman she gave her kidney to was THE BOSS.
In the good ole boys club, corporate men,do more for one another ,over the most incredible minutia, that giving someone some slack after they gave you a major body part,is no big deal.
Short of giving her leave with pay, anything she did for this woman, would be no big deal.

Im glad she's suing .

I was trying to say that the Boss was probably trying overly to show that she was NOT being preferential, and thus being kind of mean. I did not mean to imply that the nice lady was demanding better treatment. Only that maybe she was getting it dispite what the boss was doing. It is only an idea, since we have no way to know. Unless there is followup.

I did think that bring up that she had previously said she would do it was wrong. But, perhaps she had only 6 months left to live. What would you do if you were under the clock and doomed to die?
