pallidin Posted December 4, 2014 #1 Share Posted December 4, 2014 (CNN) -- What has a jet engine, a rocket booster and travels on a set of aluminum wheels? It's the Bloodhound SuperSonic Car (SSC) and it has plans to hit the world land speed record at 1000mph. Made of titanium, carbon fiber and, like superman, is designed to go faster than a speeding bullet, the Bloodhound SSC has been painstakingly put together and tested over the better part of six years. In 2016, the UK-based team plan to take the 42-foot (8.9m) vehicle to Hakskeen Pan, a dry lake bed in South Africa, for a crack at the record breaking attempt. Source: http://www.cnn.com/2014/12/04/tech/innovation/make-create-innovate-bloodhound-supersonic-car/index.html?hpt=hp_c3 This world record land speed attempt is scheduled for 2016. If all goes well, at full speed, it will travel the length of 3 football fields each second.
Jacques Terreur Posted December 4, 2014 #2 Share Posted December 4, 2014 nice. Impressive. but lacking the cool looks. i know.i know, "designed for stability purposes" and all, but it's more a land-plane than a car. if only this wasn't "form follows function"....

pallidin Posted December 4, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted December 4, 2014 I hope Top Gear covers this live, when they try the test, This will most certainly be filmed, from multiple angles I assume.
Karasu Posted December 4, 2014 #6 Share Posted December 4, 2014 It's rather phallic looking, isn't it? This will most certainly be filmed, from multiple angles I assume. They can strap in some random celebrity. I vote for Stephen Fry.

toast Posted December 4, 2014 #8 Share Posted December 4, 2014 (edited) I hope Top Gear covers this live Yeah but it must be ensured by contract that James May will not be allowed to pilot the vehicle. Edited December 4, 2014 by toast
pallidin Posted December 4, 2014 Author #9 Share Posted December 4, 2014 (edited) I can appreciate the engineering excellence, but the safety factor for the "pilot" should be of great concern as well. IDK how much this design addresses that aspect. A "roll-over" crash at that speed(or approaching that full speed) would be nothing less than fatal I guess. paperdyer Posted December 5, 2014 #15 Share Posted December 5, 2014 This evidently fills a thrill need and need for "15 minutes of fame". This is extremely dangerous and useless in the whole scheme of things. Is there a practical application I'll missing?
