Meet the Worlds first 1000mph car.

(CNN) -- What has a jet engine, a rocket booster and travels on a set of aluminum wheels? It's the Bloodhound SuperSonic Car (SSC) and it has plans to hit the world land speed record at 1000mph.

Made of titanium, carbon fiber and, like superman, is designed to go faster than a speeding bullet, the Bloodhound SSC has been painstakingly put together and tested over the better part of six years.

In 2016, the UK-based team plan to take the 42-foot (8.9m) vehicle to Hakskeen Pan, a dry lake bed in South Africa, for a crack at the record breaking attempt.

This world record land speed attempt is scheduled for 2016.

If all goes well, at full speed, it will travel the length of 3 football fields each second.

nice. Impressive.

but lacking the cool looks. i know.i know, "designed for stability purposes" and all, but it's more a land-plane than a car.

if only this wasn't "form follows function"....

And if one takes the time to look at all the pics in the link, it is one beautiful machine.

I hope Top Gear covers this live, when they try the test,

This will most certainly be filmed, from multiple angles I assume.

It's rather phallic looking, isn't it?

They can strap in some random celebrity. I vote for Stephen Fry.

yeah...! i heard he's already grown so fond of the rocket car that he became overly protective and concerned about its safety:

Yeah but it must be ensured by contract that James May will not be allowed to pilot the vehicle.

I can appreciate the engineering excellence, but the safety factor for the "pilot" should be of great concern as well.

IDK how much this design addresses that aspect.

A "roll-over" crash at that speed(or approaching that full speed) would be nothing less than fatal I guess.

Here's a great, somewhat un-related vid...

yea, it is pretty much certain death if it flips or falls apart, i doubt anything could save him at that speed. but the thrill and bragging rights well worth it, imo.

This evidently fills a thrill need and need for "15 minutes of fame". This is extremely dangerous and useless in the whole scheme of things. Is there a practical application I'll missing?

Good question. I don't know either.

Risk takers ...to reach for the unreachable. For better or worse, they inspire, influence, and cause change.

And keep ER doctors and morticians employed.
