Humans as we know them to be gone by 2100

Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer, said this may be the last century humans as we know them dominate the earth.

Desinger babies and artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to a new dominant species, he said.

Mr Shostak, who is also director of the Search for extraterrestrial intelligence (Seti) Institute, says the advancements in these two fields could lead to "alien" species that take our place at the top of the chain on Earth by 2100.

SETI? SETI "We believe we can talk to aliens with radio waves" SETI?

Pardon my skepticism. I think it's possible that humans will become extinct by the next century, but I can think of many different reasons for why we'd be killed off than that. Ones that make more sense.

It's like trying to hit a 1 inch target...in a 50,000 foot room...in the dark. Even if you did hit the target, you wouldn't know it unless there was someone saying "Yay, you did it!"

But that's beside the matter. My point is that there are other ways humanity is likely to collapse. A water shortage is going to occur in the near future. Animal species are dying at an accelerated rate. If the honey bee goes, we all go with it. We're dumb enough to bomb ourselves into oblivion. I think that one of these scenarios would do us in long before we developed an A.I. powerful enough to challenge the species that created it.
