EU tax:

In what I consider a Bridge Too Far, Jose Barroso (Head of the European Commission) wants ALLPersonal and Business Income data to be freely (actually automatically) available to all EU Nations.

I dont know about anyone else, but I certainly dont want some Uber - Corrupt East European Nation having access to my personal Income data...

The head of the European Commission has told the European Parliament he wants EU-wide exchange of income data as part of the fight against tax evasion.

Jose Manuel Barroso said he would urge Wednesday's summit of EU leaders to support automatic exchange of people's earnings data between tax authorities.

Tax evasion costs EU states 1tn euros ($1.3tn: a year) more than was spent on healthcare in 2008.

I think its a great idea for the EU. its part of the togetherness of europe. eventually you'll all be one big Federation of states. and this proposal will become the norm. its inevitable as the closer you get to a federation. i already highlighted in a post a few days ago about Barossos' grand plans for the EU Federation.

indeed Keith, in my belief, regardless of the political will to remain EU members, the United Kingdom will by 2015/20 be no longer a member of the European Union. but in the meantime im happy for those who believe in the project to continue down the road of a federation. sometimes the people get what they deserve. and any EU federation will cost billions to support. but let those who want to be part of it get on with it. but the UK should and will never be a state within a EU federation. if they think otherwise. hold a referendum with that very wording, a state within a federation and watch how a large majority. over 80% is my guess would vote NO. like i've said before we all know where the EU is heading. - federation is the goal why prolong the inevitable leaving now is just the same as leaving in years from now.

Not that I am supporting this, but tax evasion is indeed a huge problem. How would you fight against it, if not with means like these?

each country could pass laws which prevent tax evasion in the first place and at the same time have a low tax rate so people and business wont seek to avoid paying tax. but saying that. we might as well leave well alone, do you think the EU who lets remind people have never had their accounts signed off. billion € euro black hole in every budge for the last 18 years. even if the EU was to get their grubby little hands on the money they'd only waste it, it was Margaret Thatcher who said. "The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."

And what kind of laws would that be?

I cannot follow you in the middle part.

And the money would not go to the EU. Tax is for the respective countries. This is about the exchange of tax data.

Laws could be put in place to close loopholes in the tax system. like we have seen with Amazon. they trade here in the UK but have their headquarters in Luxembourg meaning they make billions in profit here in the UK but through a loophole they pay minimal tax. about 5% instead of the 20% they should. Amazon are not alone, many companies trade in the UK do the same, take Google generated 18 billion but paid just 15 million in tax. starbucks coffee 3 billion profit. paid just 8 million in tax.

has for the money would not go to the EU. are you being serious, the EU is in financial meltdown. the EU have been loaning money out. left right and centre - you should know this more than most, Berlin has been bankrolling the scheme to the tune of billions.

as for the middle part you cannot understand, the European Union every year go through the process of having the Court of Auditors go through the EU's Finacial accounts, - for over 18 years the auditors have not signed off the EU's accounts due to figures not adding up. if you or me run a business in the same way we'd be in jail long ago.

to move on slightly. but just to highlight, back in 2003 when the EU failed its audit for the 13th year. they the EU suspended any EU payments to us, United Kingdom the cheek of it. us who have honest and open accounting to the EU. meanwhile clubmed who didnt and still dont even know how to read a balance sheet, continued to receive EU money you couldn't make it up, and looking back now we wonder why the Eurozone is in trouble. the EU commissioners like to blame the world economic situation the global recession of 2008 but the truth is EU/Euro zone where in trouble way back in 2003. rant over for now.

Steve... only a proportion of GNI (Gross National Income) receipts goes toward Central EU Funding with the vast majority coming from "Own Resource" funding.

The worrying thing with this latest development is that all member Nations of the EU (including the UK) are working toward a Common Tax Union by stealth. You start by "Harmonising" Income Tax Rules (we all pay Income tax one way or another), start sharing individuals Income Tax and Income details, after which it becomes much easier to "Harmonise" Income Tax across the Union.

I NEVER signed up to this, nobody in the UK, or the rest of EU Nations, signed up to this. Income Tax is supposedly a Sovereign matter, and concommitant in that is the right NOT to allow our more "Corrupt" members to have any details of our incomes!! IMO

i agree with you Keith but this sort of thing is going to become more common and in all aspects of life because the EU is hell bent on creating one nation. when you hear Barosso speak it sends shivers down the spine, and the way the people of europe - the millions are sleepwalking into it. you have to admit Keith the EU at first looked promising, but in recent years they've somehow lost their way and its all going downhill. and fast.

Whilst I have no problem with a Federation of Politically and Economically similar Nations (I.e. The EU prior to the 2004 Enlargement) I do not think that the EU is now that body of Nations. I never wanted the enlargement, I certainly was not asked for my opinion on it!

A Federation of Core States would work, and in my opinion, would be very successful - these views I share with probably the majority of "Old EU" Citizens. There is a groundswell of despair across central Europe towards the EU's relentless eastern enlargement policy, and a feeling that it should be reversed. People want, and should be able, to vote individually on whether or not some Politically "remote" nation and its people should become fellow Citizens.
