So my boyfriend has these really strange scars on his back. They range from about two to seven inches. They are perpendicular to his spine and most seem to be centered. At first when I saw them, I of course asked what they were from. He had told me this little story about how when he was little, he got in a fight and got pushed into a table, which then broke and cut his back. Without thinking twice about the absence of stitch marks, I believed him... But the other day I was looking at them again. I quite like them actually. I asked him to tell me the story again.

He proceeded to say that he lied. That upset me, but that's not the problem right now. He was embarrassed to say that he has no idea where they came from... Only today did I remember to google these scars.

I've come across ideas of stretch marks, mostly thought to be from growth spurts. But they don't look like stretch marks at all! They look like real scars. Bumpy, and hard, like any other scar from a cut.

I also read about people having scars that are deep. The ones on my boyfriend's back are raised...

He told me that one day, he just noticed them. Well actually, he noticed just one. He says they keep appearing. He's seventeen now, and he's had them since middle school (around seventh grade he says).

Since this is normally when kids have growth spurts, I was thinking stretch marks, but they really don't look like that at all...

They don't hurt him. He doesn't remember getting hurt. His parents don't know what they are. His doctor isn't sure. Please. I'm not too worried, but there has to be some sort of explanation for this. How can these just appear??

Yes. Not usually much though. But if you rub your fingers across them, you can feel the variations on the skin.

Definitely sounds like stretch marks to me. A friend of mine had them also in the centre of his back.

Any pics?

Is the guy prone to keloids? Might be minor scratches that resulted in bigger scars.

he should go to a skin specialist and have them checked out. they may be something that could cause problems later on.  :cat:

If there are unknown changes or growth on skin, it most definately should be checked on specialist. If they keep appearing or growing, it could be really awkward in older age.

But stretch marks do sound legit. Age would also fit.

something like this has been happening to me for about 3 years now. at first i thought nothing of it as i was clumsy and all. but then i started getting theese weird dreams. in one i was chased by dogs - not normal dogs, they we're bodies of shadow with glowing red eyes and fangs that could rip appart cement. at the end of my dream as my adrenaline was so high one of the dogs clawed me on my stomach and i woke up. sweat dripping. in the morning when i started getting dressed i noticed scars in the shape of claw marks on my stomach. so i started thinking in my dreams, fighting it. after i started doing that i have been waking up with such powerfull cramps in my left or right leg that i literally had to strike my muscle nerves a few times with my fist so it would release. i could not walk for 2 days after that cramp. just this morning another one hit my left leg. after it eased up a bit i turned on the lights to see that my leg had a nasty looking gash in it. Guess what dream i had again.

Any help?

In most cases people don't realize that they subconsciously scratch themselves, Showering, sitting, eatting, sleeping. It's like touching your face 18 times an hour.
