Kenemet Posted August 10, 2014 #3 Share Posted August 10, 2014 100%. We're here, right? Statistically speaking, the answer is 100%, then. And it's not "rock to life" but rather "starstuff to life."
Alan McDougall Posted August 10, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted August 10, 2014 Simply put, I don't think anyone knows. I don't agree some people think they have a very good scientific theory, if there is a creator then that entity knows. And you seem to have misread my question , what are the odds of life originating by chance alone?
keithisco Posted August 10, 2014 #5 Share Posted August 10, 2014 (edited) I don't agree some people think they have a very good scientific theory, if there is a creator then that entity knows. And you seem to have misread my question , what are the odds of life originating by chance alone? Given the right ingredients then I believe it is inevitable. Perhaps you need to think the "by chance" scenario. IMO Edited August 10, 2014 by keithisco

+OverSword Posted August 10, 2014 #7 Share Posted August 10, 2014 I read a book by Walter Jon Williams titled 'Implied Spaces' which was about humans creating pocket universes and things developing in them that were not specifically created as part of the pocket universe but the conditions designed into the universes implied the existence of other things. Maybe life is just an inevitability because the way the universe was designed or for "chancers" (just made up that word this very moment to describe people that deny any chance of intelligent design ), the way the universe developed. aquatus1 Posted August 10, 2014 #8 Share Posted August 10, 2014 The question begs what are the odds of life originating by chance alone? Crudely put, Rock to Life (how?) As broad and vague as the question is, the answer is likely to be "inevitable". In a universe with infinite time, you have infinite probability. If you want to lay odds, you need parameters.

aquatus1 Posted August 10, 2014 #10 Share Posted August 10, 2014 "Inevitable" is really just an optimistic way of saying "I don't know."
Jeanne dArc Posted August 11, 2014 #11 Share Posted August 11, 2014 Depends on what's meant by "chance" and "odds", I suppose. Odds don't really figure into something like this, since even improbable things happen constantly: as for the formation of life though, it seems to have occurred as a result of basic principles of chemistry and physics, so the likelihood of it happening seem fairly strong. Others have said "inevitable", and I'm inclined to agree. As for "rock to life", I'm not sure what you mean... surely you don't mean to suggest that life formed from literal composite minerals That's starting to sound more like creationism: I mean, don't several religions claim that life was made by divinity from rocks, dirt, etc.? qxcontinuum Posted August 11, 2014 #13 Share Posted August 11, 2014 (edited) Buy a 300 pieces lego set , an helicopter . Open up the box and throw all the pieces in the sky. What is he chance they will fall back in such figure that will self ensemble the helicopter. That 's about life on earth, about 300 probabilities working together to create life. Is this chaos? No baby it is not! Edited August 11, 2014 by qxcontinuum

+Hammerclaw Posted August 11, 2014 #15 Share Posted August 11, 2014 You can say God did it, or clap you're hand like delighted children and cry "Oh happy chance!" Perhaps "life" and "lifeless" are just human concepts and all life is is a natural property of matter, requiring certain minimal conditions to advance to that stage. qxcontinuum Posted August 11, 2014 #23 Share Posted August 11, 2014 (edited) The universe is finite! I agree. The concept of Infinity is only to provide an answer to unknown. Everything has boundaries, including our universe, or multi universes in within universes etc. And there cannot be an infinity of radiuses in a circle that can be draw since there is already one that started initially. These are all philosophical universally accepted theorems that cannot be approved or disapproved otherwise. Or like in Mathematics; the solution cannot be demonstrated but it must be accepted as is.
