Yes, I know this one wasn't a UFO but an appendage of the spacecraft.

Thanks for bringing this one up, and responding positively to my request.
This 'thingie' was first seen widely imn a 1979 compiltion of 'UFO-related' videos assembled by imaging technician Don Pickard at the johnson Space Center. This scene, he called a view of the crescent Earth. When I prepared a review of that film, I did not check Pickard's explanation [I was younger and more foolish in those days], but later, Jack Kasher [STS-48 fame] checked the alignments and geometry and offered an argument it could NOT have been Earth. Skeptical, I looked over Kasdher's argument, and saw that it was sound. I accepted it.
For awhile I wondered if it could be a window reflection of an interior light, and I interviewed all three of the crew. None had any insights into what it could have been, since none recalled seeing any strange objects out the windows. My intuition was that it had a prosaic explanation but I could not find it.
Then somebody else, completely independently, found it -- the boom-mounted light for an impending spacewalk. They even got higher-quality imagery which, when enhanced, showed the entire structure including the boom.
My intuition had been spot on [there WAS an explanation], but I had failed to find the actual explanation.
Another defeat for the adherents of 'mystery lights MUST be true UFOs" school.
