Still Waters Posted December 17, 2014 #1 Share Posted December 17, 2014 An art student from Lancashire has spent the night sleeping rough on the streets of Preston to raise money for a homeless man who came to her rescue. The man, known only as Robbie, offered Dominique Harrison-Bentzen his last £3 for a taxi after she lost her bank card on a night out on 4 December. The 22-year-old refused, but said she was so touched she started a campaign to raise money to help him get a flat. She initially hoped to raise £500 but has since raised more than £20,000. http://www.bbc.co.uk...ashire-30511262
Keel M. Posted December 17, 2014 #2 Share Posted December 17, 2014 (edited) That's awesome! But if he doesn't have a job or anything, how's he going to maintain the flat? Edited December 17, 2014 by Child of Bast

Auntyseptic Posted December 17, 2014 #4 Share Posted December 17, 2014 (edited) Tried to do donate but couldn't find my bank card. Only joking, what a nice idea. And yes, I did wonder about maintaining a flat but one of the things supposedly stopping this man getting a job is the lack of a permanent address Things like that count when trying to find employment. The story also mentioned, As I seem to recall, That the man hadn't been homeless all that long, Scarily enough any of us could end up in that situation Though I hope not. Homelessness these days is definitely not exclusively a sign of drug/alcohol abuse or mental illness as it used to be. Today almost ANYONE can find themselves down and out just for lack of employment.
skookum Posted December 18, 2014 #6 Share Posted December 18, 2014 Homelessness these days is definitely not exclusively a sign of drug/alcohol abuse or mental illness as it used to be. Today almost ANYONE can find themselves down and out just for lack of employment. So true, I found myself in the same situation 5 years back because of a failed business. It is the most degrading catch 22 situation. You can't get help, you can't get money, you can't even get medical care. Everyone assumes you are there because of a drug or alcohol addiction. I will never forget cold winter nights where you are scared to fall asleep as you fear you will freeze to death.
