Hello everybody,

Let me start off by saying that I am new here (this is my very first post) and so I'm sorry if I have posted in the wrong section/broken any unwritten rules of this site.

My name is Laura and I live in the rural area between Liverpool and Southport in Merseyside (UK). I am a 26 year old university graduate who is currently working in a bank. I am including all this information in case it helps you in any way with my problem.

I have been experiencing things which cannot be described as 'normal' since my early teenage years. These things have varied greatly in nature but I have made a bullet pointed list of the main occurrences - in order of regularity of occurrence - below:

1. Frequent feelings of extreme unease - not just a little bit of fear like you get when there's a big spider in the bath , but full on paralysing dread. This mostly happens at night and in my own home (built in 1973), although the same thing occurred a couple of times when I was in university halls of residence down in London. It lasts anywhere between five minutes and a few hours (rare but it has happened). I cannot move or bring myself to open my eyes during these episodes.

2. Unexplainable sounds. The most common being loud bangs and/or 'snuffling/crying noises' coming from the upstairs of my house when I am downstairs. These have also been heard by both of my parents (I live with them at home at present). These also occur mainly at night-time but there have been two main incidents which occurred in broad daylight with no feasible cause.

3. Objects 'jumping off walls'. Its not as dramatic as I've made it sound there really. Nobody has actually seen this happen, but we have seen the aftermath. A family photo (my dad and I) has appeared on the floor face down three times in the last few years (it hangs on a secure wall-pin on our upstairs landing). Also, a replica weapon from a film which hangs on my bedroom wall near the door has fallen onto the floor (it is heavy and so it is supported by metal rungs and is firmly bolted to the wall, so there is no real way it could have been blown off by the wind or knocked off accidentally - it really takes a person to lift it up.)

4. Seeing a dark 'blur' or 'shadowy mass'. This has happened two - debatably three times - and all of these incidences have been in my house. The first was when I woke up at about age 18/19 to the feeling of extreme unease in my bedroom and, upon opening my eyes to tentatively look around, I saw a shapeless yet impenetrable black 'mass' in the area where my bedroom door stands. I could not see through it or past it and it took up the entire length and width of the door. The second incident was when I was alone in my house and I caught a glimpse of the same black masss behind me in the large mirror that used to hang in our lounge area. It was only there for a fraction of a second and then it seemed to disappear, but it was a very hot and bright day outside and so I am sure it was not my mind playing tricks on me. The third incidence did not happen to me, it happened to my dadnwhen I was very young (about 4). My dad is a lawyer and a massive skeptic of all things paranormal, but he reports seeing a dark figure (humanoid this time, not like my 'shapeless mass') walking around in our dining room, as he viewed it through the glass panelled door from our lounge.

Those are the main things which have been happening. The only other thing that seems to be worth noting is that numerous members of my family and friends have reported feeling very uneasy in my house, so much so that my fiancee could barely spend four hours alone there when I was out at work, and had to leave the house due to the intensity of her unease. People have also reported strange things happening to them after spending prolonged periods of time either in my house, or in my company. Both my fiancee and my best friend have been frightened by the same feeling of extreme unease IN THEIR OWN HOMES after spending long periods of time in my company e.g spending the week at my house with me when my parents were abroad.

The main point in me sharing all of this intensely private information with total strangers is this - I really need help to get to the bottom of it. In the last two years or so things have been happening far more frequently than ever before and I have even had to resort to going to my GP to get anti-anxiety tablets as it is seriously affecting my ability to calm down, relax and/or sleep well.

Please, if someone here can shed any light on what is going on then PLEASE do. Email me or reply, either is good. I just need help and I need to know what I can do to make all of this craziness stop right now.

Thanks for listening to the rant. Sorry it is so long, I just wanted to give you as much information as I can in the hopes that knowledge really is power.

Hiya :) nice to see somebody from not too far away on here (I live near Chester)

Can't really help you much except to say that I totally understand that feeling of dread you mention in your post, A similar thing happened to me at work once when I was on my own and it was a horrible intense feeling and very frightening, I actually froze for what seemed like hours but was probably more like 5-10 mins, I was so frightened that the next day I requested to work in a different area, I thought maybe I was going mad until 2 other people mentioned the exact same thing happening to them. Other strange things have happened at work so I know where you're coming from, But at least I don't have to live at work, Even though sometimes it feels like i live there!

Would getting somebody out (like a priest or psychic or similar help do you think)? I know it sounds cheesy but maybe if there is something in your house they may be able to help?

perhaps trying to record these occurances before putting it down to paranormal reasons first would help?

maybe a small camera in the dining room and a recorder in a couple of rooms?

These are some of the things I experienced when I had panic attacks. They're usually leftovers from a very traumatic time in your life (I get them occasionally even now.)

The best way to tell if it's from a panic attack is that you're getting it someplace where you usually felt no reaction AND some sort of displacement activity (I would read) can distract you from it (maybe watching a comedy program or interacting with a pet?)

Some of your experiences like the shadowy mass may well be paranormal phenomenon that you're experiencing. I would suggest the best thing to do is contact a spiritualist group in your area and see if they can help you. It's quite possible you may be sensitive to spiritual energy.

Try burning some sage in all corners of the house. Some people swear by it.

You have a poltergeist on board Laura, im quite certain of it.

did you also have moments when something is pressing on your chest? (during those episodes of 'extreme unease')

You could try to see if you can pick up anything with EVP. It sounds like you might have something there, and communicating with it might help.

Hi,

Thank-you for the wealth of responses I have had so far. Your opinions and advice are all welcome.

In response to SolarPlexus - no, I have never experienced the feeling of something pressing down on my chest? It's more of an intense feeling of being watched by something that would be standing about 3ft away.

In response to ChaosRose, I have recently come across an EVP recorder but I am still doubtful of using it in case it merely accelerates the rate of odd things that happen in my house. Do you really think it could do some good?

Thanks again.

My dads house used to be like that I was terrified of house sitting. It clearly sounded like someone stomping up the stairway at night and standing outside the bedroom doors among other things. It was a very old house after a remodel the energy seemed to eventually change and the creepy dreadful feeling is gone as well as the strange noises. By strange coincidence I had made sage smudges as it grows in that area and lit them there it wasn't with the intent of clearing the house but maybe its related. You might not be paranoid this does happen. I was not the only one that witnessed/felt it and not the only to notice its gone now. I am betting that you have an old house with a bit of history. If it is uncomfortable for you and you suspect energies/spirits try changing the atmosphere let them know its your house now and be sure it is distinguishable from perhaps a time when they were comfortably residing. Ifthey are tearing down your pictures perhaps they don't realise/accept yet the reality of you being the resident it can't hurt to make that clear it might feel crazy but its better than living in fear of it.

The first step would be to talk to a psychologist or doctor about what you're experiencing. As Kenemet has alluded to, these occurrences could easily be brought on by psychological trauma, even if you aren't aware of having suffered anything. I would advise against speaking to spiritualists or religious folk until after you've spoken to a professional healthcare worker of some kind; the spiritualists will only fill your head with paranormal drivel. Only after the rational explanations are ruled out can a fantastical explanation be rationally considered.

Hello.

I am quite interested about this. I am not sure that what is there with you is a poltergeist. I think it could be shadow person. You mentioned that you have feelings of unease, even when you are not at home. And those who are alone at your house feel threatened too? Do you have any animals at your home? They often sense paranormal things. Has anyone ever used ouija board there? It can really made things worse...
