Fresh calls for a cull of Italy's brown bears and wild boar, after several attacks and a fatal mauling on Saturday, are reviving a divisive debate about wildlife management in the Mediterranean.

A Sicilian pensioner, Salvatore Rinaudo, died on Saturday near the seaside town of Cefalu after a ferocious mauling by a massive wild boar.

I support the efforts to do Bear Awareness (as proposed by some in the area)... but I also support a call for hunting the boars. Wild pigs breed like crazy, and are seldom standing around just by themselves (unlike bears). Where you see one hog, you're going to find up to several hundred nearby.

They are hunted in Mississippi as varmints. No permit necessary, year round. Very destructive and potentially dangerous.

I almost got into a fist fight with a wild boar once. True story. Afterwards I wished I was more of a hunter, there was some good eating on that angry beast.

Not only are wild hogs aggressive, they breed like flies and do millions in damage to agriculture.
