Hot Potato

In reading a blurb about the influences behind Huxley's Brave New World, I realized something...

In the era in which he lived, society had this idea, this expectation, that as we developed society and technology, we would be able to conquer all of our ills...that modernized society and technology could trump the problems that plagued humanity, creating a utopia for all.

We see this idea continued in television shows like Star Trek, and in novels, human beings constantly looking to the future as being the time when all issues would be resoved and utopia would exist.
We have become stuck in this thinking...

The concept that utopia exists in a high-tech future is pervasive... it is alluring and it feels inevitable.  The problem is that this idea fails to encompass the reality...as long as we are looking towards a better future, the circumstances of today are excusable.

More importantly,

As long as the circumstances of today are excusable, we will not work as hard for future change... or present-day change.

We are constantly pushing the redevelopment and remastering of society to a future date... we think that "someday" things will be better and that clears our feeling of responsibility towards making "today" better.  This shows in every aspect of society... we collect debt, individually and as a country, that will be paid off "someday" when things are better or it becomes easier, we look for "someday" change instead of making change in the problems we see today.  We will take only half a cup of coffee so there is a little left in the coffee pot, to excuse us from making fresh coffee.  It's passed to the next person.
Even that moment when we see a car waiting to pull out from a side road, and we think "I don't have to let them go ahead of me, the next person will".   Maybe they will... maybe they won't, what is important is we continuously pass the responsibility on to the next person, the next president, the next generation, the next century, the next society.  We don't want to put the effort into fixing the problems ourselves... so if we can just pass the hot potato to the next person, we do.

Not to pick on religion, but it, too, is guilty of pushing this type of idea.  "Do what we say today, and at a future time, you'll get your reward"

Did no one watch Popeye?  Wimpy NEVER paid for those burgers the next day.  He just continued to walk through the door, and ask for a burger that he would pay for later.  Tomorrow never comes... there is only today.

It is fun and exciting to imagine an amazing utopian future for mankind... but unless we bring society closer to a utopia each day, it will not be achieved.  It is not enough to say "people are working on it... there are scientists, doctors, etc who work at making better things today"  That's true... but we cannot expect the improvement of society to ride on the backs of these people alone... and they cannot fix the mentality of the majority of mankind who are selfish and absorbed in their own interests on a daily basis... that is us.

We need to wake up and work together.  Every day.  For the betterment of mankind today and tomorrow.

Sorry to sound so cliche ....pay it forward. Karma doesn't work for you if you don't work for it!

You know what?  Cliches have been around for so long because there is truth in them... no harm reminding ourselves of those little messages even if they've been passed around a thousand times before.

Besides, people usually need to see / hear something 10-20 times to remember it, and considerably more to really absorb it and begin to act upon it.
