I am almost leery to post because I'm new, but after some searching, I haven't found a thread exactly like this. So here it goes:
Has anyone ever experienced unlikely, chance encounters with strangers that stood out. Perhaps you've met someone in passing and then saw them again, strangely, in a completely different location years later. Or you've met someone that, come to find out, is the same person your friend from Florida was telling you about on the phone a day earlier. Perhaps you see the same person in different places... What is your story?
My story:
I went road-tripping with a friend after high school, across the 50 states. A month into the trip, we were checking out San Francisco for the first time, seeing all these places we'd read about in favorite books. Upstairs at City Lights Book Shop, I was perusing through some Ginsberg and some clumsy guy next to me dropped a book and it landed on my foot. Annoyed that he was standing so close, I picked it up and shoved it at him. He apologized sheepishly and I moved away. I remember he had glasses and was fair-haired and sort of soft-looking.
That night, we parked our car at the park at the end of Ashbury and it was towed in the early morning. We ended up having to hoof it all the way across the city to get the car out of impound. It took us 45 minutes+ to make the walk and we ended up in a neighborhood no where near City Lights.
At a street crossing near the impound, my friend was tugging my arm so we could sprint across before the light changed and I accidentally rammed into a dude who was coming around the corner. I turned around to apologize and it was the same guy from City Lights. I can remember this look of shock on his face and then realization he said "Hey...wait!" But my friend yanked and I remember giving him a quick, apologetic look and rushing out of the way of traffic.
There was some feeling as we ran away that it was ok, that I'd meet him again anyway, so no need to fuss about a missed, lucky encounter. 15 years later, I still haven't met him again but the weird sense of...okay-ness is still there.
Maybe this is silly, but out of the whole city of San Francisco, at 6 in the morning, I almost knock down the same guy who dropped a book on my foot the day before, in a completely different part of the city. So weird!
Anyone have any similar experiences?
