Insanity Posted December 20, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 20, 2013 Ever wondered what the weather and climate was like in Middle Earth, the land of hobbits, dwarves, elves and orcs, from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings? Climate scientists from the University of Bristol, UK have used a climate model, similar to those used in the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, to simulate and investigate the climate of Middle Earth. The results show that The Shire, where the hobbit Bilbo Baggins lived before he was whisked away on his unexpected adventure described in The Hobbit, had a climate very similar to that of Lincolnshire and Leicestershire in the UK. However, Mordor, the land of the evil Sauron, had a climate similar to that of Los Angeles and western Texas. ‘The Climate of Middle Earth’ by Radagast the Brown, describes the results in full, and translations are available for elves and dwarves. http://www.bristol.a...2013/10013.html
Frank Merton Posted December 20, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 20, 2013 It seems Tolkien had a good sense of how topography would effect climate if scientists are able to explain the climates he describes using the topography he describes. Orcseeker Posted December 23, 2013 #3 Share Posted December 23, 2013 It seems Tolkien had a good sense of how topography would effect climate if scientists are able to explain the climates he describes using the topography he describes. Tolkien was extremely thorough with his creation of middle earth.

Insanity Posted December 24, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted December 24, 2013 Scientific grants at work! From the article. "The model simulations were carried out on the supercomputers of the Advanced Centre for Research Computing at the University of Bristol. They were not funded in any way, and were set up in the author’s spare time."
Leonardo Posted December 24, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 24, 2013 So, New Zealand (or parts of) could be a model for the Shire, while Australia has an affinity with Mordor. The Kiwi's will be pleased, their orc-neighbours to the west, a little less so.
FLOMBIE Posted December 24, 2013 #7 Share Posted December 24, 2013 This is nice. It reminds me of my Law studies, where some fellow students and I constructed a law code based on what we saw in the movie 'Blade Runner'. That was fun, and we learned a lot.
