Bendy Demon Posted December 22, 2014 #1 Share Posted December 22, 2014 As of late I have noticed that the add-on for FireFox, Adblock Plus, seems to be not doing its job. I keep it updated and haven't touched its settings yet it seems to be letting in more adds than I like it to. I recently uninstalled it, cleared the leftover settings then reinstalled it. It works but it still lets in stuff I don't want while blocking stuff it doesn't need to block. So..any ideas as to what other add-ons are decent. (Please, NoScript is just too complex to use)

StarMountainKid Posted December 22, 2014 #3 Share Posted December 22, 2014 (edited) I use Ghostery which has worked well for me for about two years. I use Firefox. Edited December 22, 2014 by StarMountainKid
Wickian Posted December 22, 2014 #4 Share Posted December 22, 2014 Ghostery is indeed a strong backup for those few cases that the adblockers don't work.
Bendy Demon Posted December 22, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted December 22, 2014 Yeah, I was looking at Ghostery too a while back. For quite some time, Adblock Plus was working really nice but suddenly it started letting in ads I didn't want and it is a bit disconcerting. I do have "high speed" internet ( 1 megabyte per second which is the cheapest) but I still do not want all those ads as it still slows down things especially if I want to open up multiple pages in tabs. So basically I have to monkey with the adblock rules and exceptions which is also a pain. Anyways I am relieved, in a way, that I am not the only one who has observed that Adblock has changed. Thanks for the suggestions.
SHaYap Posted December 22, 2014 #6 Share Posted December 22, 2014 I still use Spybot - SD Resident with TeaTimer on ~ but I am still on WinXp so I don't know if it applies here ~ I use CCleaner to handle the cookies allowed and my WinXp services for AutoUpdate disabled ~ as is all apps and add ons has Auto update disabled ~ I only check updates manually for all the Apps I use ~ FireFox holds blocking those ads quite well for me ~ though I don't really surf a lot of sites other than the usual I have been using for years ~ very seldom do I go on sites that I am not familiar with ~ and I clear my History whenever I do go to unfamiliar sites ~ a simple way to keep the History lists in check is right clicking on the entries in the History lists and select [Forget About This Site] ~ it clears the particular entry in the History lists while keeping the other entries intact ~ ~

Bendy Demon Posted December 22, 2014 Author #8 Share Posted December 22, 2014 Hey Third-Eye...I still use XP as well. But I guess I should disable auto update too and if I do upgrade to Windows 7 I will probably disable auto update on that too. I used to have Spybot but I ended up getting a few viruses from them during updates so I decided to just avoid them altogether. Technology is great when it works but when it glitches then there is trouble.

I used to have Spybot but I ended up getting a few viruses from them during updates so I decided to just avoid them altogether. Technology is great when it works but when it glitches then there is trouble. I heard about that ... but from what I found out from the Forums then it was 'false detect' due in part to dodgy apps and virus signatures ~ I have been using Spybot for over 6 years ... I update it manually every two weeks or so ~ one thing to always remember is to use the 'Immunize' function with ALL browsers closed ~ even Windows Explorer ~ Right ... now that you mentioned it as so a friend of mine did get into a mess with accepting cookies from some sites that let in a lot of Ads along with it ~ Download the latest FireFox and Spybot Uninstall FireFox ~ Clean out the registry with CCleaner or Glary or Registry whatever ~ shutdown ~ Then clean the registry again on startup ~ install Spybot ~ scan and lock IE settings ~ then install FireFox ~ then immunize with all browsers closed ~ disable auto updates and make FF default browser ~ use a blank Start page ... regardless of whatever Homepage you like ~ then go IE and make it never check for newer pages then set keep History to zero days and no amount of disk space used for cache ~ set 'content type' to 'no action' or at least 'always ask' Not to be paranoid but that's what I do ~ And if you wanna be over board set 'default' download folder to something else ~ just remember where it is or you'll spend a lot of time looking for where your downloads go ~ Do all the above *offline* ~ good luck ~
Occult1 Posted December 23, 2014 #10 Share Posted December 23, 2014 (edited) As of late I have noticed that the add-on for FireFox, Adblock Plus, seems to be not doing its job.I keep it updated and haven't touched its settings yet it seems to be letting in more adds than I like it to. You have to disallow the acceptable ads withelist in Adblock Plus if you want to see all ads disappear. That's how the developpers behind this extension make money, by allowing some 'non-intrusive' ads to get through which have been deemed acceptable. Here's how to manage that: https://adblockplus..../acceptable-ads I really don't have any issue with Adblock Plus, or Adblock Edge for that matter. The default EasyList will block the vast majority of English websites ads but yeah it's very possible to stumble upon unblocked elements once in a while, bearing in mind that the list gets updated every day to keep up with the ad providers, it's a mouse and cat game.. You can add some more blocking filters (but not too many) depending on your needs: https://adblockplus....n/subscriptions This extension is actually more than an adblocker hence the ''Plus'', it can block web trackers, malware domains, social media buttons and other annoyances.. Hope that helps! Edited December 23, 2014 by sam_comm
Bendy Demon Posted December 25, 2014 Author #11 Share Posted December 25, 2014 I see. Thanks. I will look into that because I really did not stop to consider that aspect.
