Commander CMG Posted July 26, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 26, 2009 Offers of help are pouring in for an eight-year-old Liberian girl disowned by her own family in Phoenix, Arizona, after being raped by four boys. The girl is under the care of the Arizona Child Protective Service (CPS) because her parents said she had shamed them, and they did not want her back. Phoenix police said calls had come in from all over the US offering money, or even to adopt the young girl. The boys, Liberian immigrants aged nine to 14, have been charged with rape. The case has sparked outrage across the US and even drawn condemnation from Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, an outspoken anti-rape campaigner. Read more... Leonardo Posted July 26, 2009 #3 Share Posted July 26, 2009 I read this article online yesterday. Amidst my disgust and dismay at the criminal ignorance of the parents, one word surfaced in my mind - a word I believe the article pointedly (and deliberately) did not print or allude to...Religion. itsnotoutthere Posted July 26, 2009 #5 Share Posted July 26, 2009 Yet again, 15th century people living in a 21st century world. Have the girl adopted by a loving family & send the parents & the rapists back to Liberia. (preferably sharing the same cabin on a slow cargo ship)
The Angry Tuna Posted July 26, 2009 #6 Share Posted July 26, 2009 Such is the tragedy of organized religion. In this case my guess would be Islam. A lot of people may not be familiar with this, but it is pretty common in the Middle East.
Corp Posted July 26, 2009 #7 Share Posted July 26, 2009 (edited) You know this could have just as well been a result of culture, instead of religion. As for the OP saw the story a few days ago. Too bad they can't deport the family. Edited July 26, 2009 by Corp
nuttychef Posted July 26, 2009 #8 Share Posted July 26, 2009 Another example of how belief is more important than the value of a life.

momentarylapseofreason Posted July 27, 2009 #10 Share Posted July 27, 2009 (edited) You know this could have just as well been a result of culture, instead of religion. Culture is most always influenced by religion, they are almost inseperable. And it is mostly in the Islamic religion where girls/women are mostly blamed and punished for the rape, and too often the word "dishonored" comes up. Screw respecting people's religious beliefs in this case. It's not belief any more, it's sheer cruelty fueled by stupidity Edited July 27, 2009 by momentarylapseofreason
Corp Posted July 27, 2009 #11 Share Posted July 27, 2009 Is the family Muslim? Liberia has a Christian majority after all.
