Aliens colonized this planet long before the dinosaurs. They genetically engineered humans to harvest any and all resources useful to their purposes, and then took off. Leaving their human "pets" behind.

How do I know this? I DON'T! I just made all of that up! Or maybe I am right on the money..NOBODY KNOWS!!!

It is a highly unlikely guess; more likely we just evolved. That makes more sense and is supported by the evidence.
