Exeter Posted September 14, 2003 #1 Share Posted September 14, 2003 This may not be the best topic to start a thread on, but I find this aberration somewhat of a mystery. Why do some people feel the need to have multiple personas on the same forum? What is the point? They always get caught. Do they really need to talk to themselves that badly? Do they really need to invent someone to help boost their low credibility? All of the different forum sites I frequent allow anyone to be as anonymous as they choose to be, and the worst that can happen is they can be banned for not following forum rules. Yet, I've seen this "phenomena" occur at several sites, and the individuals engaged in this odd behavior are not always teens. There have been older forum members who have been caught doing this as well. I've noticed two common aspects of this behavior: The creation of 1) the adversary, and/or 2) the corroborator. The adversary is used to attack the original persona, either by contradicting or flaming the post. This allows the adversary's creator to make a witty or insightful reply, thereby putting the attacker in his/her place, and making it's creator seem somehow dignified. Sadly, the person doing this rarely posts anything witty or insightful. The corroborator is just that; an imaginary person who was 'there' when 'it' happened, and saw it, heard it, felt it, touched it, or smelled it just like it's creator described. Yet, for some reason, the corroborator can never provide any proof or corroborating evidence of his/her/its own. This all can get weirder still. As I mention in another thread, there was a guy at another forum site with five different personas, two of which were female. Can anyone help me understand behavior?
