A great British delicacy, Yorkshire forced rhubarb, has been granted protected status by Europe.

The delicate pink vegetable is harvested by candlelight in the "rhubarb triangle" between Wakefield, Bradford and Leeds.

The traditional method of farming was created especially for the soil in the area and produces sweet, delicate pink rhubarb.

But in recent years it has come under threat as consumers eat less rhubarb and growers in Holland imitate the forcing method. There are now just 12 farmers left in the triangle.

Farmers fought back by campaigning to be ranked alongside Parma Ham or Champagne and have now been granted Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status by the European Commission.
