But in this case the doctors made a mistake, probably because of both their own and the states prejudices/ legal  framework in the matter. On the other hand, hindsight is a wonderful thing. Did the doctors know the baby was dieing anyway,  and if so would that have made a difference? I assume even Irish law allows for an abortion where the mothers life is in serious danger.

Yes, the doctors knew the fetus would not make it and told her so three days before the fetal heartbeat stopped.  The really ridiculous thing is they would not leave a women in active labor for three days with a dilated cervix because the risk of infection is so great.  In the old days midwives had a saying that you never let the sun set twice on a laboring woman or you will lose both mother and child.

There are some things I don't understand about this incident.  Was the woman an Irish citizen?  Was her husband there?  Is it possible that she could have been transported to another hospital?  Could the police have been called to escort her away?

To add, the doctor knew that with the woman suffering with septicaemia, there was a fatal chance she would have died, but he still decided  not to abort

The doctor went against the Irish laws on abortion.. .For their law states - Abortion in the Republic of Ireland is illegal unless it occurs as the result of a medical intervention performed to save the life of the mother. http://en.wikipedia....blic_of_Ireland

So this could be why so many are wanting the doctor tried for medical manslaughter .. others  are crying out - Murder..

What I don't understand is..  Why didn't her husband get her rushed over the Irish boarder to the north..  Newry is just over the boarder... Daisy Hill  ( Newry hospital )  would have done it for her...  Maybe he didn't know ?   It's a pity ...

Hi BM,

I read somewhere that she was fully dilated and losing amniotic fluid. The baby was miscarrying, so therefore why didn't they deliver the baby! Which takes away any problem of the 'abortion' issue. I know what a Catholic Priest would of said if one had been present, if there was no hope for the baby (which there wasn't) save the mother. I know this for a fact because I have been through a similar situation.

I think it was because they detected a fetal  heartbeat, they refused to do it

I think it was criminal to let this mum die when the baby had no chance, they must of known the baby would die and therefore could of performed an emergency section to save the mother and get round the issue of 'abortion'.  She should of been saved and I hope some heads roll for this. I am pro-life and I am against abortion except in serious health issues for the mum. It's just so sad

I agree with you, as do so many outraged catholics  ..The Irish law is against abortion  UNLESS the mothers life is in danger..( I posted this info previously ) .. The doctor did not obey the law...  I think heads will soon roll..
